What is The Midnight Library about?

“Between life and death, there is a library,” Haig wrote in his 2020 novel that’s full of emotion, what-ifs, and a touch of romance. The Midnight Library follows Nora, a woman who didn’t make the best choices or lead the most joyful life. After Nora finds herself in the Midnight Library, she gets a chance “to live as if she had done things differently.”

Haig teases, “With the help of an old friend, she can now undo every one of her regrets as she tries to work out her perfect life. But things aren’t always what she imagined they’d be, and soon her choices place the library and herself in extreme danger. Before time runs out, she must answer the ultimate question: what is the best way to live?”

Who has been cast in The Midnight Library?

Right now, only Pugh, best known for Midsommar, Little Women, and Thunderbolts*, is the only member of the cast who’s been officially announced. Check back here for more updates on who will join Pugh between the pages of her library books as they are announced.

When will The Midnight Library be released?

According to Deadline, The Midnight Library will enter pre-production this fall, and they hope to film at the start of 2027. That means that there’s no release date yet! Still, with that schedule, we’d expect a late 2027 or 2028 premiere date.

Will The Midnight Library premiere in the U.S.?

Right now, The Midnight Library is set for a European theatrical release. That said, there is plenty of time to find an avenue for a U.S. release as well as the premiere gets closer.

Who else is involved in The Midnight Library adaptation?

The Midnight Library will be produced by Pugh, alongside director Garth Davis (Lion), and Haig as executive producer. The screenplay was written by Olivier Award winner Laura Wade (Rivals) and Tony nominee Nick Payne (We Live In Time).

Davis told Deadline, “I couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Florence Pugh on The Midnight Library,” Davis said. The director recently worked with Pugh on the Netflix limited series East of Eden. “Her warmth and talent are magical, and together I know we’ll do something special working with Matt’s iconic novel,” he continued. “This is a story that moves us both — a celebration of life in all its possibility and complexity. With Graham Broadbent, Blueprint Pictures and Studiocanal behind us, I can’t wait to illuminate this adventure.”
