Joan Vassos and Pascal Ibgui‘s love story didn’t get a happy ending. The diva-esque Frenchman, who made quite an impression with The Golden Bachelorette lead, revealed that he wasn’t “in love” with her, but rather saw her as a friend. This surprising admission came after she took him to Tahiti for the fantasy suite portion of the show.

However, after partaking in an inspiring Tahitian ritual, Pascal began to back away. Shocked by the hairdresser’s revelation, Joan started to question herself and her journey. But now, Pascal is finally ready to express what exactly made him step away from the latest installment in The Bachelor franchise.

“I need to have that chemistry. I need to have that spark. It’s important for me,” the 69-year-old Chicago resident told outlets, including Swooon after the Men Tell All special. He also divulged that there’s another reason that made him step away from her, “How do we say that she’s still living little bit in the past?”

Despite knowing that Joan and him never would have worked, Pascal was adamant to share, “I have a lot of respect for Joan. I think I give her a lot of credit for the work… She’s class act. She’s a pretty woman.”

Looking back, Pascal also realized that the premise of being a contestant on The Golden Bachelorette wasn’t really a true fit for him. “I prefer being the hunter than the prey, you know,” he said as he explained why he would rather take on the lead role instead. “I mean, I prefer having 25 women to choose from, then being chosen by that one woman,” he noted.

He added, “I’m looking for that chemistry, that spark, that fire, that touch, that smell.” Pascal emphasized that sexual attraction is a huge part of his criteria and that you can’t always find that when just one option is presented.

“I need a partner who would turn me on,” he once again reiterated. “Chemistry is extremely important for me.”
