Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen’s (Jackson White) toxic saga entered a new chapter in the final moments of Tell Me Lies Season 2, and we’ve been itching to find out what will happen next. Season 3 has been in the works for most of 2025, and we finally know the answer to the question on all of our minds: When will Tell Me Lies return for Season 3? (Hint: You won’t have to wait much longer.)

“All I will say is: It’s just as crazy as ever,” Van Patten told Elle in August. “I didn’t think it could get crazier, but fans are in for a ride. There’s more chaos; there’s more juicy juice. Even we don’t know what happens at the end of the season. We all come up with our own theories, which is really fun.” In a later interview with Glamour, Van Patten hinted that Season 3 would be “different” than previous seasons. “Season 3 really dives into the other characters, other than Stephen and Lucy. You really start to see everyone’s web get more and more tangled until we’re all one messy, entangled web, which I think will be really interesting. I would say it’s not just Lucy and Stephen making bad decisions this season.”

Hulu announced on December 19, 2024, that Tell Me Lies has been renewed for Season 3. Season 2 premiered on September 14, 2024, with the finale airing on October 16. Based on Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name, the second season left us with so many questions to be answered. So, when can we expect the third season? Who’s returning? Swooon is breaking down all the latest details about Season 3.

Hulu renewed the show for a second season in November 2022, but the series was delayed due to the double Hollywood strikes in 2023. This caused a two-year wait between seasons.

Who will return for Tell Me Lies Season 3?

Grace Van Patten and Jackson White are confirmed to return as Lucy and Stephen. The chaotic college drama revolves around their toxic romance. The rest of the series regulars reprising their roles include Sonia Mena as Pippa, Cat Missal as Bree, Spencer House as Wrigley, Branden Cook as Evan, and Alicia Crowder as Diana.

Initially, it was looking like Tom Ellis wouldn’t be returning as Professor Oliver, who joined in Season 2 as an older (and very married) Baird teacher who has an affair with Bree. “I think Tom was just wanting to do one season. I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him,” showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer (who also happens to be Ellis’ real-life wife) told Variety in October 2024.

However, in May 2025, Ellis revealed that he will be coming back to Baird. “Yes, I’m going back. I’m actually going there on Saturday to start shooting,” Ellis told People. He promised fans “will not be disappointed” by Season 3. “It is as dark, toxic, and funny as ever,” Ellis added. “And just when you thought our characters couldn’t do anything more ridiculous to themselves, they ended up doing it.”

Oppenheimer, the show’s executive producer, will continue to helm the series as showrunner.

Iris Apatow has a recurring role in Season 3, per Deadline. She’ll play Amanda, a bubbly but fragile college freshman keeping a big secret. Costa D’Angelo is also joining as a series regular. He’ll play Alex, a psychology grad student and part-time drug dealer who has a complicated past with Bree. According to Deadline, Alex seems “aloof and borderline rude,” but “it quickly becomes clear that there are hidden depths to him.”

Will Leo come back in Season 3?

That remains to be seen. Leo (Thomas Doherty) was one of the new additions to Season 2, playing Lucy’s new love interest. After being taunted by Stephen all season, Leo finally hit his breaking point (literally) and pummeled Stephen at a party beatdown. “Maybe Leo isn’t all that he seems. There is a lot to do with him,” Doherty told Us Weekly about his hopes for Leo in the third season.

What will happen in Season 3?

The official synopsis for Season 3 reads: “Tell Me Lies Season 3 follows Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco as they’ve rekindled their tumultuous romance in time for spring semester at Baird College. While they promise things will be different this time, past indiscretions hinder their best intentions, and Lucy finds herself embroiled in a controversy she wants nothing to do with. Meanwhile, the disastrous repercussions from the previous year also force Lucy and Stephen’s friends to face their own destructive behaviors. As scandalous secrets fester around campus, vicious consequences threaten Lucy and everyone in her circle.”

Tell Me Lies Season 2 ended with so many hanging threads. In the college era, Drew’s (Benjamin Wadsworth) return to Baird ended in tragedy. After a night out with Wrigley, Drew died in his sleep after mixing booze and drugs. Wrigley was left devastated by his little brother’s death.

“I actually don’t know what we’re going to do in Season 3 because it’s hard for three seasons to do a constant spiral,” House told TV Insider. “So hopefully there’s maybe an arc of hope a little bit on the guilt he carries and the depression he deals with and stuff.”

In the 2015 timeline, Stephen dropped the mother of all bombshells after hooking up with Lucy again. Years earlier, he had secretly recorded Evan confessing to his end-of-year drunken hookup with Lucy. He sent the audio to Bree just before she was set to walk down the aisle.

“By the third season, we will still have some 2008 because there’s stuff that we have to wrap up there. But I think it would be a little bit shifted in the sense that there will probably be more 2015 than 2008,” Oppenheimer told Variety.
