Baby & Johnny Forever
Will the ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel Come Out in 2025? The Latest Updates

Do you miss having “the time of your life” with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the summer of 1987? Of course you do.
A holiday retreat amid the Catskills was the setting for a vacation full of passionate dancing, love, and hidden affairs. Dirty Dancing is almost entering its fourth decade but is still as beloved as it was 38 years ago. So, when Lionsgate announced a sequel in 2020, the fanbase dusted out their old cassettes, while the newer generation wondered what the film was all about and soon fell in love with Baby and Johnny’s love story.

When is the Dirty Dancing sequel coming out?
The sequel was originally slated for February 9, 2024. So, when will it come to the big or small screen?
No official date has been announced since, but the IMDb page stated a June 6, 2025 release date. However, this is also pretty unlikely, considering production hasn’t started yet.
Who is starring in the Dirty Dancing sequel?
No casting announcements have been made public yet.
With many hoping for the return of the original cast members, that is becoming more unlikely as time goes on. Over the years, many of the actors involved have sadly died. Swayze, who portrayed the swoonworthy Johnny Castle, died in 2009 from pancreatic cancer. Jerry Orbach (who played Baby’s dad) and Jack Weston (who played Max Kellerman) are no longer alive either. Others like Cynthia Rhodes (who played Penny) have retired from acting.
Therefore, it’s to be concluded that many new cast members will be joining the sequel. However, two people who are still around to come back are the main character Baby Houseman (Grey) and her mom (Kelly Bishop).
Is Jennifer Grey returning as Baby?
Yes, she is. Although her lips have been sealed about the project, Grey has confirmed her return in the upcoming sequel.
“I can’t tell you much about Dirty Dancing as I’m not going to make promises. I’m just waiting for them to really nail it down as it has to be right. We can push that aside until we next time we speak when it hopefully will all be ironed out,” she told Collider.
Jonathan Levine will be the director of the Dirty Dancing sequel. He has previously directed rom-coms like 50/50 and Warm Bodies.
“While the original Dirty Dancing has always been one of my favorite films, I never imagined I would direct the sequel,” Levine said in a statement, according to Variety. “Through co-writing it, I fell in love with the characters (new and old), the world of 1990s Catskills New York, and the music, which will range from songs from the original movie to ‘90s hip-hop. I can’t wait to collaborate with Jennifer to bring this beautiful story of summer and romance and dancing to a generation of new fans. And to the longtime ones, I promise we will not ruin your childhood. We will tackle the assignment with sophistication, ambition, and, above all, love.”
What is the Dirty Dancing sequel about?
Besides Grey’s involvement, nothing else is really known about the follow-up film.
To allow the continuity to make sense, the sequel will likely take place in the ’90s. Dirty Dancing was released in 1987, but the film was set in the ’60s.
With much dancing to look forward to, there won’t be any time for social media or a constant stream of entertainment. Luckily, those things weren’t even around yet in the ’90s.
The sequel joins a growing Dirty Dancing universe. In 2004, the prequel Havana Nights, was released. In 2017, a remake of the legendary flick was made and aired on ABC.
