Will Ty & Annie Stay Together? ‘Sweet Magnolias’ EP Weighs In On Their Future Beyond Season 4
Ty (Carson Rowland) and Annie (Anneliese Judge) have been the ultimate slow burn throughout Sweet Magnolias‘ four seasons. Their moms are best friends, so Ty and Annie’s journey started in the sandbox. After years of being just friends (and Annie harboring a crush), Ty and Annie finally became something more.
Ty admitted his feelings for Annie on Halloween, and they embraced the glow of first love. Annie supported Ty when he went off on tour, while she nurtured her love of photography and contemplated her next step. When Ty returned to Serenity and told Annie about going on tour in Europe, he said he wanted Annie to come with him. Annie didn’t want to put her dreams — an acceptance to a photography school on the West Coast — on hold for Ty.
So, will Ty and Annie’s relationship end before it truly gets off the ground? Swooon spoke with showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson about the young couple’s future.
“We know people have waited a long time for them to get together, but we wanted to examine that sort of dream/myth that your first love is going to be deep but also effortless and beautiful,” Anderson said. “Every relationship takes work, and we talked in the writers’ room about how easy it is at that age to think we will slay dragons together, and everything will be fine until you’re like, ‘Well, my dragons over there, and your dragons over there. Now what are we going to do?'”
She continued, “Every good relationship requires space to let both of you grow, and sometimes we grow in different directions for a moment or for longer, and we wanted to leave the possibility of exploring how, as glorious as first love may be, the road still isn’t smooth, and we hope we get that chance.”
The showrunner admitted that a major theme she wanted to explore in Season 4 was “the expectation a lot of people put on women to put their dreams aside to take care of other people.” Will Ty and Annie be able to navigate through this obstacle? (If you’ve read the Sweet Magnolias books, you’ll have your answer. However, the show has veered outside of the source material with Bill’s death, so anything’s possible!)
