All About ‘Adolescence’ Star Erin Doherty’s Romance With Her Famous Girlfriend
Adolescence is the show everyone is talking about right now, and Erin Doherty is already garnering critical acclaim for her performance as psychoanalyst Briony Ariston.
The talented actor has previously taken on substantial roles like Princess Anne in The Crown and Mary Carr A Thousand Blows. She’s a force on screen, but she prefers to be low-key when it comes to her personal life. She’s been in a loving relationship for nearly a decade.

How did Erin and Sophie meet?
Doherty and Melville met in 2017 doing theater, Doherty told Porter. However, the couple only gives away snippets of their personal lives, so details about the early stages of their relationship are scarce. They bought a place together in South London and live there with their dog, Free.
When talking about coming to terms with her sexuality during her appearance on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, Doherty revealed that it wasn’t until she turned 25 that she discovered that part of herself. The 32-year-old said, “It took me a really, really long time to finally get to the point where I was like, ‘Oh, I’m gay.'”
She further explained, “I never really was ready to carve out that path for myself, even though looking back, I always knew that my relationships with men weren’t satisfying in that wholehearted way that I wanted them to be.”
“I wouldn’t change it because it’s really made me adore that part and really cherish it and I just hope that I get to offer that to other women or men, whoever you are just lean into your truth because there was something so monumental about that moment of going, ‘Whoa, this is me,’ and just embracing it and not applying anything else to it. I just think we all deserve that.”
Who is Sophie Melville?
Melville, who hails from Wales, is an actor just like her partner. Unlike Doherty, Melville has focused her attention on stage plays. Her breakout role was in her native Wales as Iphigenia in Splott at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff.
Melville has, however, dabbled in the TV realm. She was the lead in the British drama The Way and has had some guest roles on Call the Midwife and The Chelsea Detective.
What has Erin said about her relationship?
The two are very much in love and want the other to succeed in every way possible. Never having worked on a project together, Doherty divulged to Porter, “When a self-tape audition comes in, both of us are like, ‘Let’s drop everything and get it done.’ She also added that they, “don’t go up for the same roles.”
Doherty and Melville love to have a low-key night in when they can. “She’s made me so healthy. I used to sit at home eating a bag of chocolates and now we have like, a kale salad,” Doherty revealed about Melville.
