When is Materialists coming out?
The film has nabbed a release date of June 13, 2025, so it’s going to be the perfect summer rom-com! Materialists will have a theatrical release. A streaming release date has not been announced. However, given A24’s deal with Max, the film will likely end up streaming there.
What is Materialists about?
Materialists really is a rom-com fiend’s dream. Not only is the main character, Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a highly sought-after matchmaker for the elites of New York City, but she also gets stuck in her very own love triangle between two very different men.
At one of her client’s weddings, she meets the very wealthy Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), who is one of the groomsmen. As Lucy becomes entangled with Harry, she also encounters John (Chris Evans). If you’re wondering if John is also a millionaire, then you’re mistaken. He is a waiter/struggling actor and her ex. An ex that she had dumped but couldn’t move on from. With this messy love triangle, Lucy could potentially even jeopardize her career and clients.
Who is in Materialists?
The three main characters are all high-profile actors. Johnson, Pascal, and Evans have all dabbled in the world of blockbusters, as well as indie favorites. Johnson got her start in the romance world playing the lead in Fifty Shades of Grey. Pascal has mostly stuck to TV dramas in recent years with The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. He plays Reed Richards in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
While Evans is best known for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in a decade of Marvel movies, he’s no stranger to rom-coms. He’s got Ghosted, Before We Go, and What’s Your Number? under his belt.
Besides the three leads, other prolific actors are attached to the project, including Meryl Streep‘s youngest daughter, The Gilded Age star Louisa Jacobson, Eddie Cahill, and the son of director Steven Spielberg, Sawyer Spielberg.
Song made her directorial film debut with Past Lives, which earned several Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The director also penned the script for Materialists.
Is there a trailer?
Yes! A24 dropped the first trailer on March 18. In less than a week, the trailer has racked up more than nine million views.
