Could Cassie (Sofia Carson) and Luke’s (Nicholas Galitzine) love story continue in a Purple Hearts sequel? Fans of the 2022 Netflix movie are still hopeful.

The romantic drama was one of the most-watched Netflix films of 2022, and a sequel is not out of the realm of possibility, given how the movie ended. Swooon spoke with Carson for her new movie, The Life List, and had to get an update about a possible Purple Hearts 2.

“There’s a chance,” Carson told Swooon. “There is a chance. I won’t say no.”

Purple Hearts, based on the novel of the same name by Tess Wakefield, follows the unexpected love story of singer Cassie Salazar and Marine trainee Luke Morrow. They decide to get married to improve their individual financial situations: Luke to pay off his debt to a drug dealer, and Cassie to receive healthcare for her type 1 diabetes.

Luke is deployed to Iraq but sent home after he’s severely injured in an IED explosion. Luke and Cassie fall in love as he recovers, but they face many obstacles on their road to happily ever after. After Luke’s former drug dealer exposes Luke and Cassie’s marriage pact, Luke pleads guilty and protects Cassie from criminal charges. He spends six months in a military prison.

When Luke is released from prison, he and Cassie reunite and happily embrace a new chapter together. Who wouldn’t want to see Luke and Cassie living out their married life, possibly welcoming a kid?!

Carson has never ruled out a Purple Hearts sequel. The Descendants alum previously told Variety that she’s “very protective” of a sequel but knows how passionate fans are for one.

“Now fans have kind of been demanding a sequel and there’s so many fan theories and fan stories and potential spinoffs, so of course it’s lovely to think of a life for Cassie and Luke beyond this film,” she said. “I adore being Cassie and I’d be curious to see where it goes. Who knows. You never know!”
