‘Polyfamily’ Couples Reveal How They Explained Polyamorous Lifestyle to Their Kids (VIDEO)
TLC is exploring a new family dynamic in the brand-new series Polyfamily. The show follows two polyamorous couples as they raise their four children together under one roof. In Swooon’s exclusive preview of the series premiere, the couples give insight into their family life.
“When we started out our polyamorous lifestyle, we were really nervous for Dylan and Reina and what that might mean for them. Is it going to lead to them getting bullied? Are they not going to understand it? We want them to be able to choose a lifestyle that they want to have,” Alysia, who is married to Tyler, says.
Tyler adds, “Now as they’ve gotten older, we’ve had all of the age appropriate conversations about things and they understand. Our family looks different than all the other families, and some people don’t think that’s a good thing. They understand a lot.”
Alysia birthed Dylan, Reina, and Barrett. Taya, who is married to Sean, birthed Carver, and she’s currently expecting the polyfamily’s fifth baby.
“We didn’t just fall in love with Alysia and Tyler, but we fell in love with Reina and Dylan,” Taya admits. “And we’ve been able to create this big family with four parents where we can all help out and be there for each other. We’ve just been so lucky to be able to provide that for our kids.”
Tyler believes that polyamory “allows you to work to your strengths with the partners you have and them to work to their strengths. And not everybody has to do everything for someone.”
In their family, Tyler’s Mr. Fix It, while Sean’s the organizer. Taya helps by staying home with the kids, and Alysia is on top of getting the kids enrolled in school, sports, and activities. Balancing out their responsibilities helps their entire family unit run smoothly.
