John Cena Looks Back at ‘Trainwreck’ 10 Years Later: ‘It Really Did Wonders For Me’

John Cena was already famous for his WWE career when he nabbed the role of Steven, the gym-obsessed bro Amy (Amy Schumer) dated in Trainwreck. The rom-com hit theaters on July 17, 2015, and became a box office and critically acclaimed hit.
At the Amazon Upfronts, Swooon spoke with Cena about the 10th anniversary of the film and how it changed his life. He called the movie a “blast” and praised Trainwreck’s message.
“It’s a story about someone finding themselves through their relationships and being open and honest with their failures and who they are,” Cena said. “It’s a great movie.”
The actor added, “It really did wonders for me.” Since Trainwreck, Cena has solidified himself as a comedic force in movies like Blockers, Vacation Friends, and more. “There’s always a special place for Amy and Judd [Apatow] in my heart, but I think watching it back as a fan, it’s a fun movie to watch,” he said.
Cena has been married to his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, since 2020. Swooon asked the WWE star what makes a guy like him, well, swoon. “Being present is really cool,” Cena explained. “Because you feel heard, and I think when someone honestly treats you as part of the team, I think those are two things that really get me to the core.”
In the midst of his WWE heel turn, Cena will star in the upcoming Prime Video movie Heads of State, He’ll play the President of the United States, who has to join forces with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Idris Elba) to thwart a global conspiracy after being targets of a foreign adversary. Priyanka Chopra also stars in the film, which will hit the streamer on July 2.
