How ‘And Just Like That’ Finally Got Rosie O’Donnell for That Shocking Nun Role

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for And Just Like That’s Season 3 premiere, “Outlook Good.”]
If it were up to And Just Like That showrunner Michael Patrick King, Rosie O’Donnell would have been on the Sex and the City spinoff long before Season 3. The comedian popped up in the Season 3 premiere as a new love interest for Miranda (Cynthia Nixon).
Miranda and O’Donnell’s character, Mary, had a passionate night together, only for Mary to drop a bombshell on Miranda the next day. She had been a virgin her whole life until now because she’s a… nun.
Nixon revealed on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy that King has “written a part hoping to get [Rosie] for every one of our seasons,” but “it’s never worked out until now.” Host Andy Cohen immediately asked why the parts King had written for O’Donnell had never come to fruition until Season 3.
“Either because the character got cut or whatever happened. But then finally, finally we snagged her for the pilot of the season,” Nixon explained.
Finally snagging O’Donnell for And Just Like That Season 3 is thanks to Nixon. “I’m good friends with Cynthia Nixon, and my daughter was actually her assistant on set for the last season of Sex and — of And Just Like That,” O’Donnell told Variety. “I call it Sex and the City 2, but that’s not it. She put her on there, and then she said, ‘By the way, Michael told me that he has a role for you. Are you up for it?’ I said, ‘Are you kidding me? In a minute!’ I didn’t even have to think about it.”
Unfortunately, O’Donnell’s presence on And Just Like That will likely be just this one episode. While rocking a Wicked T-shirt, Mary and Miranda met up in the middle of Times Square. Miranda was worried about Mary leaving the nunnery for her, but Mary stressed that her only relationship was with God. Miranda changed Mary’s life “for good,” but not enough to break up with the Lord.
