‘Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall Shares Rare Relationship Update About Boyfriend Russell Thomas
On Sex and the City, Samantha spares no details about her love life, but actress Kim Cattrall herself is far more private about her real-life relationship with boyfriend Russell Thomas.
However, the Central Intelligence star recently opened up about her longtime partner to The Times. “We’ve been together almost ten years now,” Cattrall said, according to the June 12 profile. “And we’ve had a blast. We’ve just had so much fun.”
She first met the British actor during a Radio 4 gig in London. In 2015, Cattrall had become a guest editor on the Woman’s Hour program — she spoke about being a nearly 60-year-old, single, and childless woman — and she later returned in April 2016 for a special edition. She recorded her diary entries from the period in between when she underwent cognitive behavioral therapy for her insomnia.
“Part of it was related to menopause and stress, and just not taking any time out,” she said. The profile also noted that grief — her father died from Alzheimer’s in 2012 — played a part in her condition. “I just hit a wall.”
It was during the diary reading that Cattrall met Thomas, who was working for the BBC. “He was an actor originally,” she shared. “He’s had an incredibly interesting life and really done it on his terms. He’s a bit of a rebel, which I love,” she said. After their first meeting, they kept in touch, and Thomas visited Cattrall in Canada, her native country. Now, the couple rotates between living in New York, Vancouver Island, and the U.K.
Cattrall faced more grief early on in their relationship, with her brother dying by suicide in 2018. “What I felt in spades was how alone I was,” she recalled. “The questions that I was having in the small hours were: ‘Do I deserve what I have? Why don’t I deserve other things? Am I not worthy? Why am I alone? Will I be alone?’”
She went on to add, “I keep saying I wish I hadn’t gone through all that. And then I thought to myself, ‘Well, if I hadn’t have gone through that, I wouldn’t have met Russ.’ Life has surprises and trade-offs. It was a bad time, but I learned a tremendous amount. And at the other end of it was this incredible, fun playmate.”
