‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Candice King Reveals New Details About Caroline & Klaus Relationship

Klaroline was never supposed to happen. Well, technically, it didn’t happen, as Vampire Diaries fans may recall. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline Forbes (Candice King) never had a full-blown romance — but King says that the writers had no idea that the duo’s relationship would become such a big talking point of the show.
Little did they know that fans — and the actors themselves — would still be discussing the not-quite-couple almost a decade after the last episode aired. During a June 24 appearance on the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast, King reflected on the topic that she says she gets asked about the most.
Klaus and Caroline first crossed paths all the way back in Season 3 of the eight-season paranormal drama. On her 18th birthday, Klaus saved Caroline from a deadly werewolf bite. “She was a damsel in distress, which happened with Caroline a lot in those early years, and it was truly a non-thing,” King said, adding that he scene was more about humanizing Klaus, a ruthless 1,000-year-old vampire.
“I think that [scene] birthed the chemistry, as opposed to the other way around,” executive producer Julie Plec told Entertainment Weekly.
From there, Klaus and Caroline had a few moments scattered throughout the series, and rare as they were, their fiery, deep interactions left a lasting impression on fans. However, they weren’t part of some long-term storyline — until the writers saw that #Klaroline was trending. They didn’t even think that the duo’s first meeting had any romantic undertones initially, King explained.

“It was like this whole thing,” she added. “So then [the writers] started, every once in a while, would write a fun scene between them just to tease the audience. That was it. It was just supposed to be like some silly, fun thing for the audience every once in a while.”
King has an idea why Klaus and Caroline’s bond resonated (and still resonates) with viewers. “I don’t know if it’s because he wanted her so deeply, and she would be like, ‘Shoo,’ but everyone is convinced that they were the endgame from the beginning,” she said.
Though Caroline married Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) in the end, King still appreciates the connection her character had with Klaus, even though it never became a fully-fledged relationship. “I think Caroline maybe didn’t know what she wanted, and he wanted what he couldn’t have,” she pointed out. “I like that the audience got to sense that [and] feel that as well in all those seasons.”
