Robin Roberts has shared a few details about her 20-year romance with Amber Laign over the years, but she hasn’t opened up much about their new life as a married couple (they wed in 2023) — until now.

Laign told People that her dates with the Good Morning America anchor usually involve going to their favorite neighborhood restaurants, but the couple switched things up by attending the opening of Jean Smart’s Broadway play, Call Me Izzy, on June 12.

“We keep it fresh,” Laign said of what makes the relationship work. “You’ve got to keep it fresh, have our little date nights.”

For their two-year anniversary, the couple will shake things up even further by going on a celebratory vacation. “We’re [actually going] to Rwanda,” Roberts revealed. “Because we wanted to celebrate that way, because our time together has been an adventure. And we thought what better way than to be with the gorillas … in Rwanda?”

The 64-year-old broadcaster also got candid about the realities of their relationship, which began after a blind date in 2005. “But also, I will say — and we’re going to be honest — we’ve had peaks and valleys,” she added. “Many more peaks than valleys.”

Shortly before their wedding in September 2023, Roberts provided some more insight into their story in a GMA segment. “We had only been dating not even two years when I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Roberts said. “She could have bailed early on in the relationship. No one would have blamed her.”

Laign remained by the newscaster’s side, and when Laign was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, they swapped roles. “[Getting married] was something we had talked about but we had put it off, [Laign] became ill, but … it is saying yes to that next chapter,” Roberts said when she announced their engagement on the air in January 2023.

Since tying the knot, the couple has learned that success hinges on communication and “not seeing each other through the lens of your childhood.”

“Because everything goes back to when you were younger,” she told People earlier this month. “And so, we had to respect that we had different upbringings. It was really very helpful once we made that breakthrough.”

That same evening, Laign tacked on another piece of marriage advice. “The true secret: separate apartments,” Laign told E! News.

“I mean, 20 years. Something’s got to be working,” Roberts said during the same conversation.
