‘We Were Liars’ Stars Compete in Ultimate Book-to-Screen Trivia Test (VIDEO)
Who will come out on top, and whose trivia-winning dreams will go up in flames? (Pun intended.)
To celebrate the premiere of their hit Prime Video summer thriller, We Were Liars, stars Emily Alyn Lind, Joseph Zada, Shubham Maheshwari, and Esther McGregor (a.k.a. the Liars) came to the Swooon office for a friendly competition testing their We Were Liars knowledge.
Right off the bat, the Liars proved to be deeply competitive, throwing out numerous classic book titles that could have been the inspiration behind their show. While Zada guessed The Great Gatsby, and McGregor originally guessed Romeo and Juliet, it was McGregor who locked in the correct answer: Wuthering Heights.
Perhaps the most expected question during our trivia test was: “In the book, Mirren has a brother. What is his name?” While McGregor was sure we’d bring up her character’s eliminated brother, Maheshwari correctly answered that her brother’s name was Taft.
Another contentious question revolved around the Liars’ love for Scrabble (brb still sobbing over that scene). When we asked which two Scrabble letters have the highest point value, Zada quickly answered, “Q and X” before correcting himself with a subtle “no, no, no, don’t do that to me.” However, we did, in fact, have to “do that” to him because his second answer, “Q and Y,” was still incorrect. Ultimately, Lind came in clutch with the correct answer, “Q and Z.”
Our final question landed Lind and McGregor in a one-on-one battle to grab our buzzer, which was a copy of the book: “What was the first show that Candice King [Bess] worked on with [We Were Liars co-creator] Julie Plec?” As both actresses reached for the book while Lind correctly answered “The Vampire Diaries,” McGregor screamed in agony, revealing that she broke her “stupid nail” on the book.
Even though we tried to tell the Liars that everyone was a winner (here’s a proverbial participation trophy), the cast needed an official ruling on who won first place. After carefully watching back the footage, it was clear that their very own Cadence Sinclair came out on top. While McGregor cheered, “I really hope it’s me,” she came in last place with one point—and one less nail.
