Ryan Murphy is a celebrity magician. The TV mogul is currently working on adapting Bret Easton Ellis’ 2021 novel, The Shards, a fictionalized retelling of his senior year at a posh prep school, for FX as a new TV series. Two of the show’s cast members come from very famous families.

Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, is set to executive produce and star in The Shards. Her role hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but we’re banking on Susan or Debbie, which are two significant roles in the novel. One of her costars is Homer James Jigme Gere, the son of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell. The younger Gere will play the key role of Robert Mallory, a mysterious new student.

But Gerber and Gere are connected beyond their nepo baby status. Gerber’s mom, Cindy, and Gere’s dad, Richard, were once married! Yes, those who lived and breathed the 1990s will remember that Richard and Cindy were husband and wife from 1991 to 1995.

It’s unclear if the costars knew each other before they were cast in The Shards. Gerber, who initially followed in her mother’s modeling footsteps, has been segueing into acting. She’s had roles in Bottoms, Saturday Night, and Palm Royale. She also founded the book club Library Science. As for Gere, The Shards will be his first major onscreen role.

Their parents, who had a 17-year age gap, had notable red carpet moments during their relationship. In a 2016 podcast, Crawford opened up about her ex-husband.

“We’re friendly, but I think it’s almost like he’s gone back to being, like, ‘Richard Gere’ again, like a stranger, because we don’t really see each other that much,” she said at the time. “I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things, but I don’t know if we were ever friends, like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere.”
