Bachelor Nation fans, we have a mystery to solve. If, like us, you were watching the July 21 episode of Bachelor in Paradise and noticed a particular word and related phrases dropped by Dale Moss, you’re not alone.

Throughout the two-hour episode, Dale said a version of “debt it” or “debted it” a whopping eight times. While those here at Swooon typically are up to date with the times, we were more than a little confused about what Dale meant by his “debt” usage. Naturally, we picked up our phones and searched for clues. So, what does “debted it” mean exactly?

Let’s recap how Dale used the term(s). When talking about his kiss with Alli Jo Hinkes with his current match, Kat Izzo, who was understandably upset that Dale didn’t mention the smooch, Dale said, “It wasn’t in the cards, so I debted it.” During a separate conversation with Kat about the Alli Jo situation, Dale said, “I’m not trying to hide anything. I just debted it.” He later used the phrase as a question, “Can we debt it?”

Kat was mystified (and also annoyed) by Dale talking about “debt it” or “debted it” in front of her. In frustration, she said, “If I hear ‘debt it’ one more time, I’m going to jump in the pool.” She asked some of the girls about “debted it,” and most were confused as well. However, one of them noted that it means that he “shut it down.”

The “shut it down” definition provides key context for those of us not in the know. He shut down his connection with Alli Jo when he knew it wasn’t going anywhere. Every time he used the term, the 36-year-old actor meant that he was shutting something down. Cue the Paul Rudd “look at us” meme. Look at us figuring out what the kids are saying these days (or maybe it’s just Dale).
