[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 6, “Every Single Piece of My Heart.”]

We never would’ve guessed that The Buccaneers would deliver the most devastating love story of the year (so far), but here we are.

Even though the show started off as a joyful celebration of sisterhood and growing up, lighter moments are few and far between at this point in Season 2. The period drama has never been all butterflies and rainbows, but nothing could have prepared us for the tragic events of Episode 6, which resulted in the untimely death of one of its best characters and romances.

Before we really get into it, we need to (tearfully) break down what happened. Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and her son were being held hostage by her abusive and unraveling husband, Lord James Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Her friends catch on to what’s happening, and Seadown’s siblings — Richard and Honoria — know that they’re the only ones who can get close enough to rescue them.

The whole sequence had us on the edge of our seats. Thankfully, Honoria (Mia Threapleton) makes it out with the baby, but Seadown soon realizes his siblings have tricked him. Just as Richard (Josh Dylan) and Jinny are about to escape, Seadown points a gun at them before turning it on himself. The brothers fight. The scene cuts away to Jinny, who’s made it outside in the scuffle, but in the distance, a shot goes off. Jinny finds Seadown crying over Richard’s dead body.

Brutal, right? We were already misty-eyed, but when Jinny had to tell Conchita (Alisha Boe) that her husband wouldn’t be coming home, we were full-on sobbing.

In a show full of unstable romances, Richard and Conchita’s relationship remained remarkably solid. A comfort ship, if you will. While Nan and Guy pined for each other from afar, Lizzy became entangled in a sordid affair with her friend’s husband, Richard, and Conchita provided an uncomplicated reprieve. That’s part of what made Richard’s death so jarring.

“It’s really unexpected in this show because [the] tone is light, generally,” Boe told TV Insider of her character’s new circumstances. “So it was unexpected that we were going to explore grief and show how Conchita moves through it.”

The married couple had been in a good place all season long. They didn’t let their financial troubles get them down, becoming matchmakers for extra cash. That development led to the season’s few comedic moments. It was a major switch-up from how they were in Season 1, which had the couple dealing with Richard’s unaccepting family. He fell in love with Conchita’s uninhibited nature, and married her knowing that she wouldn’t fit into his parents’ mold. For a brief moment, he gave into the pressure and wanted his wife to act like more proper lady, but he eventually realized she shouldn’t have to. (We love growth!)

The sunnier tone of Richard and Conchita’s story in Season 2 (at least until Episode 6) didn’t make their romance any less strong, because it was obvious they were still madly in love with each other. At the end of Season 1, Richard promised to be a better man for Conchita, and ultimately, he stuck to his word. They brought out the best in each other, and we’ll be grieving the loss of this couple for however long The Buccaneers stays on the air.
