What Happened to Virginia in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’? Breaking Down That Shocking Twist

Leave it to Adam Sandler to pull off a major twist no one saw coming. Nearly 20 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Sandler and many familiar faces returned for Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered July 25 on Netflix.
Fans were thrilled to see fellow original star Julie Bowen back as Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest in the first film. But did Happy and Virginia get their happy ending? Their love story takes quite a turn in the sequel.
Unfortunately, Virginia and Happy don’t get to spend forever together. After the events of the first film, Happy and Virginia get married and have five kids together. They have the perfect life until Happy accidentally kills Virginia with a golf ball. (Yes, you read that right.)
Happy turns away from golf after Virginia’s tragic death and loses everything. His four sons — Wayne (Ethan Cutkosky), Gordie (Maxwell Jacob Friedman), Bobby (Philip Fine Schneider), and Terry (Conor Sherry) — move into an apartment, while Happy and his daughter, Vienna (played by Sandler’s real-life daughter Sunny Sandler), downsize from their gorgeous Victorian-style home to a new place.

When Vienna gets accepted into the Paris Opera Ballet School, Happy wants to make his daughter’s dream come true. He returns to golf in order to win the money needed to send Vienna to ballet school. Happy has to face a new chapter of the golfing world, but he prevails in the end. On the final putt, Happy sees a vision of Virginia with younger versions of their kids cheering him on. “I love you. I love you so much,” Virginia says, giving Happy the final push he needs to win.
After dropping Vienna off at the airport, Happy looks up at the sky and sees Virginia (as well as Bob Barker) once again. “You’re okay,” she says, and he mouths a kiss to his dead wife. Happy’s finally ready to move forward with his life, golf clubs and all.
