Wedding Bells Are Ringing! All the Details About the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel

Rom-com lovers no longer need to “Say a Little Prayer” because a long-awaited My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel is officially in the works.
When it comes to the quintessential wedding movie, My Best Friend’s Wedding has it all, from a deeply metaphoric car chase to a hilarious wedding party lunch flash mob. The rom-com follows Jules (Julia Roberts), a food critic with a massive crush on her best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney), with whom she made a marriage pact many years prior. Unfortunately for Jules, Michael announces that he will be getting married in four days (yes, four!) to a perky college student (Cameron Diaz), who is the creme brûlée to Jules’ jello in the worst of ways (IYKYK).
On July 29, Variety announced that a sequel to the 1997 film My Best Friend’s Wedding was in early development at Sony Pictures, the distributor of the original movie. Fresh off her A24 hit Materialists, featuring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, Celine Song is set to write the screenplay. When will the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel be released?
There is currently no premiere date set for the sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding. As of July 30, the film is in early development, which indicates that Song is currently working on the script. Seeing as no director or producers have been tapped to work on the film so far, fans can expect to see the sequel hit theaters in late 2026 or 2027 at the earliest.
Who has been cast in the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel?
Right now, the only name attached to the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel is Song. However, we can’t imagine a second My Best Friend’s Wedding film without at least Roberts and Mulroney in the cast. Diaz is another strong possibility to rejoin the cast in the sequel, seeing as she recently returned to acting following a decade-long hiatus. Seems like the perfect time to get the bride, groom, and bitter bridesmaid trio back together. Rupert Everett, too!

What will the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel be about?

Looking at other classic rom-com sequels such as 2016’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and the recently announced Meet the Parents sequel, Focker In-Law, which is set to premiere in 2026, it seems likely that a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel would follow a second-generation engagement. Perhaps Jules and Michael’s kids are set to tie the knot? Wouldn’t it be such a shame if a love-lorn best friend got in the way…
What has the original cast said about a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel?
In an exclusive interview with Swooon, Mulroney stated that when it comes to rom-coms and wedding movies, My Best Friend’s Wedding “has never been surpassed.” During our Romance Rewind with the prolific star, Mulroney referred to My Best Friend’s Wedding as not just his favorite but “everyone’s favorite rom-com.” He even threw a hilarious jab at all other rom-coms, asking fans to “Name another [universally beloved rom-com].” Responding to his own question, he quipped, “[When] Harry Met Sally? Who called who, my mail or whatever [a.k.a. You’ve Got Mail]? One of those dumb movies with Tom Hanks?”
