Things aren’t always picture-perfect in 19 Kids and Counting alum Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo‘s relationship. On a new episode of The Jinger and Jeremy Podcast, the couple made an unexpected confession about struggles they’ve faced in their marriage.

While they didn’t spill too many specific details, Vuolo confirmed that a “betrayal” took place.

“There was a time in our life very early on in our marriage were we experienced some … I describe it as a deep betrayal,” he shared. “Because you have relationships in your life that ground you, and when those shake or are removed, you feel like, ‘What am I doing?'”

Vuolo called it a “moment when we were both deeply unsettled, where it was like, we both felt that shaking.” He added that they spoke to their pastor during the troubling time. “He said, ‘Jeremy, I think the Lord’s teaching you how to walk alone,'” Vuolo continued. “And not alone, like, me away from her or us from the Lord, but the two of us having to be dependent on him.”

Duggar and Vuolo met on a mission trip in 2015 and tied the knot the following year. They share three children.

“This is the first time we’re even talking about [this],” Vuolo admitted. “Now it’s eight years on, we’re in Los Angeles, we have friends who are family to us, we have a deep community that we’re invested in, involved in. We have everything we didn’t have in that moment, and yet, those years were necessary.”

He acknowledged that “a lot of people listening might try to figure out” what happened, and added that “the betrayal wasn’t even family.” Without giving too many details away, he explained, “It was people in my life that she had come into, and people I had been really excited for her to meet and engage with, and then it was difficult.”

Duggar finally jumped in and credited the Lord for knowing “exactly what we needed in that moment.”
