Netflix’s My Oxford Year is the newest romance movie to take the world by storm, and the film features some notable names for those who eat, sleep, and breathe romance. Purple Hearts star Sofia Carson and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story breakout Corey Mylchreest play Anna and Jamie, the couple at the heart of the story.

Dougray Scott plays Jamie’s father, William Davenport, who goes to great lengths to save his son. While the role of William isn’t a romantic one, Scott is no stranger to the romance genre. He actually starred in the beloved 1998 romantic period drama Ever After: A Cinderella Story. Yes, the Drew Barrymore Cinderella movie.

Scott played the handsome Prince Henry, Prince of France, who falls in love with Barrymore’s Danielle de Barbarac. The film, which was released 27 years ago on July 31, 1998, remains a classic Cinderella story that never gets old, no matter how many times you watch it. (We’ve tested this.)

Back in 2023, Scott reunited (via satellite) on The Drew Barrymore Show with his Ever After costars Barrymore, Melanie Lynskey, and Megan Dodds to celebrate the movie’s 25th anniversary. Scott spoke fondly of Ever After’s enduring legacy.

“I think it was ahead of its time, the movie,” he said. “I remember reading and thinking, ‘Wow, this is really quite forward thinking, and it’s a movie about empowerment.'”

Scott added that Ever After is “great example of how young women don’t have to look up to men to led, to be set an example of, and they have the ability to take control of their own lives.” Speaking to Barrymore, he noted, “I think that your character really was such a wonderful example of that, and I thought it was a thoroughly modern film, and I was just really happy to be part of that.”

If you’ve watched (and now weeped over) My Oxford Year and have realized the Ever After connection, you can stream the movie on Disney+ now.
