Is There Any Romance in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2?

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Wednesday Season 2 Episodes 1-4.]
Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) has had bad luck in love. In Season 1 of Wednesday, the stoic teenager wound up in a surprising love triangle with Xavier (Percy Hynes White) and Tyler (Hunter Doohan). It was met with varying reactions from fans, and Ortega herself even commented on her character’s romantic subplot, claiming that it “made no sense.”
Then, ahead of Season 2, Ortega spoke about whether or not love was in the cards for Wednesday this time around. “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more,” she revealed during Variety’s Actors on Actors series. “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
We couldn’t help but wonder if the actress was trying to throw fans off the scent, or if Wednesday really has sworn off love in Season 2. If so, has the show abandoned romance for its other characters, too? Now that we’ve binged the first four episodes, we have the answers to those questions below.
Does Wednesday have a love interest in Season 2?
Wednesday seems to be staunchly anti-romance in Season 2. She hasn’t shown a modicum of interest in anyone, which is a major departure from Season 1. Back then, she formed a connection with classmate Xavier, but that relationship has hit a dead end. He’s left Nevermore Academy for good. (More on that here.)
The situation is a bit more complicated with Tyler, who was on the other corner of Wednesday’s love triangle. After he revealed his identity as the killer Hyde, Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers) defeated him. He’s been locked away in the Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility for treatment since then, so he and Wednesday are separated for most of Part 1.
When Wednesday visits her former love interest for information in Episode 2, she seems to harbor no lingering feelings. In fact, she mostly acts indifferent toward him. Tyler tries to get under her skin, suggesting that she couldn’t resist seeing him. “You sensed the monster in me,” he taunts. “You fell in love with it. We’re two black-hearted souls ready to pillage the world together.”
She shuts him down, but when Tyler threatens to kill Enid, she can’t resist getting the last word in. She admits that seeing Tyler locked up and fading away into obscurity “makes [her] dark heart grin.” She gives him a verbal lashing, leaving him with a particularly brutal remark: “I already take up enough space in your twisted head.”
They don’t interact again until Tyler breaks out of confinement, coming face-to-face with Wednesday. He launches her out of a window, which leaves her in a pretty bad state, but he doesn’t outright kill her. Is it a sign that Tyler actually has a soft spot for Wednesday? Only time will tell.
Does Wednesday Season 2 have any other romances?
Enid has become entangled in her own love triangle this go around. Her Season 1 love interest, Ajax (Georgie Farmer), is still in the picture, but after a summer apart, Enid’s feelings have changed. She spends a few episodes avoiding having a conversation with Ajax and exploring a steamy connection with werewolf Bruno (newcomer Noah B. Taylor) instead. Enid does eventually break the news to Ajax in Episode 3.
Other than that, Season 2 doesn’t offer much in the way of romance, aside from the ever-present love between Wednesday’s parents. Gomez and Morticia (Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones) are as obsessed with each other as ever, even though Morticia is preoccupied with her rebellious daughter. Wednesday wants to explore her psychic abilities more, despite the deadly toll it may take on her. Her mother tries to thwart her plans and keep her daughter safe.
Oh, and we can’t forget about the fun addition of Fester’s (Fred Armisen) tryst with asylum cafeteria worker Louise. After he infiltrates the facility to gather intel for Wednesday, they have a brief (but passionate) romance before he escapes. “Of all the women I’ve ever used, you’re my favorite,” he tells Louise, before planting a cinematic kiss on her. We love to see it!
