The Buccaneers Season 2 may be over, but we’re still thinking about Theo (Guy Remmers) confessing his love for Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag) just before her wedding to Hector (Jacob Ifan) in the second season’s fifth episode. Channeling his best Mr. Darcy, a sweaty and flustered Theo begged Lizzy not to get married unless Hector could give her the kind of love she has with him.

He acknowledged that they could only ever exist in secret. Theo didn’t ask Lizzy to choose him; instead, he urged her to choose herself and not settle for anything less than a “whole love.” Aubri Ibrag spoke with Swooon about this pivotal Episode 5 moment, arguably the most romantic scene of the entire season.

“It’s like completely selfless love. I think that is the purest form of love,” Ibrag said about Theo’s speech. “When it’s completely selfless, and you just feel like, ‘I know for a fact I can’t give you what you want.’ It’s not that typical, ‘It’s not me. It’s you.’ He’s literally saying to her, ‘Because of these times that we’re in, I can’t get a divorce. I’ll never be able to give you what you deserve, which is to be out and about with your husband and live a free, amazing, full life.’ But also, he knows that Lizzy’s not in love with Hector, because if she was in love with Hector, she wouldn’t have slept with Theo.”

She added, “For Lizzy, I think deep down, she knows she needs to choose herself. She knows that deep down for sure. I think him saying that has just lit a light on that truth that she already knew, and now she can’t ignore it. That’s why she leaves the wedding and leaves Hector at the altar.”

The actress recalled filming the pre-wedding scene with Remmers. “The way Guy was delivering it, I literally could not,” Ibrag gushed. “We had maybe half an hour or 45 minutes to film the whole thing. It honestly felt like such a high-stakes moment. I was just bawling my eyes out. The director, Rachel, she was like, ‘All right, well, Bri, you just need to suck them tears back in and show strength.’ It’s such a well-written speech that one. I think it resonates with me, personally, and I’m sure it resonates with others.”

Lizzy listened to Theo and didn’t marry Hector. However, by the Season 2 finale, her engagement to Hector was back on because someone — ahem, Hector — outed Lizzy and Theo’s affair. However, Theo decided to shock everyone by abdicating his role as Duke of Tintagel so he could divorce Nan and be with Lizzy. Regardless of how you feel about the Nan, Theo, Lizzy situation, that was a bold move for love.
