‘Superman’ Doc Reveals Romantic Clark & Lois Moment That Didn’t Make the Final Cut

Clois shippers stay winning.

Ahead of Superman‘s streaming debut in the near future — which will allow fans to replay Clark and Lois’ (David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan) scenes to their hearts’ content —  we just got a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie. An hour-long documentary called the Adventures in the Making of Superman just arrived on YouTube, and we’re here give you the Clois CliffsNotes.

Don’t get us wrong: We ate up every bit of content the documentary offered up, but we’re loud-and-proud romance lovers. The breakdown of Clark and Lois’ apartment scenes was our favorite.

Director James Gunn reveals that the crew filmed this part of the movie during their first day on set. “We’re shooting Clark and Lois’ scenes in Lois’ apartment, which are very important scenes, so it’s a nerve-racking day,” he explained. “It’s very unusual to have a 10-page talking scene in a spectacle film, but here you go.”

“This was [Corenswet and Brosnahan’s] audition scene,” he continues. “They got these jobs based on their performances in this scene, so I think that we can get there.”

Henry Braham, Superman‘s Director of Photography, describes how they wanted the camera to be connected to Clark and Lois in her apartment, specifically when they’re in the kitchen. Fans will remember that a baseball bat-wielding Lois, thinking that someone broke into her home, finds Clark making dinner for their three-month dating anniversary. It turns into a steamy makeout session, with Clark lifting her onto the kitchen counter.

The documentary shows them taking notes from Gunn, which resulted in the final product. Fans will remember that it has Clark kissing Lois while he brags about how great they are at pretending to be rival coworkers. “There’s no better way to get to know your costar quickly than to makeout for five hours then to fight for another eight,” Brosnahan quipped.

There was a take also where Clark had his glasses on while he kissed Lois, who proceeded to take them off and put them on herself. (Oh, how we wish that made the final cut.) There’s also a bit where after Clark agrees to be Lois’ interviewee, Brosnahan presses two pecks to Corenswet’s lips, even after Gunn yells “cut.”

Their ensuing clash is less lovey-dovey, but the passion is still there. “This is where we get to know Lois and Clark as people, as characters, and we see what makes them tic and also how they love each other and how they don’t love each other so well,” Gunn said, referring to their differing views on Superman interfering in international affairs.

Their conversation definitely gets heated, but there’s another moment that could’ve added some levity, had the movie included it. When Superman’s making his point to Lois, Gunn asked Corenswet to do a little twirl. It’s a shame, we think, that it didn’t make it into the movie. Justice for the twirl! We’re not that mad, though, because at least we got to see it in the bonus content.
