Andie MacDowell Makes Rare Comment About Ex-Husband Paul Qualley & Their Marriage

Andie MacDowell and her first husband, Paul Qualley, didn’t work out, but she still has so much love for her ex. On August 12, The Way Home star shared rare details about the day she met Qualley.

MacDowell included a romantic photo of herself staring into Qualley’s eyes. She opened up about her feelings for Qualley and how “heartbroken” she was about their divorce.

“In this photograph, you can see how completely smitten I was when I met the father of my children on a gap shoot,” MacDowell wrote in her Facebook post. “We had chemistry right off the bat it was electric. After time together,in marriage, I learned what Love really was and even though we ended up getting a divorced (we were both heartbroken) we came out of it with three absolutely gorgeous children.”

The 67-year-old continued, “Life is not always easy and sometimes you go through difficult times. But the great beauty of the process of life is you never know how it’s going to end. I’m grateful we are able to be a grandparents to our grandchildren together. I am proud of our children just as Paul is and now we have the wonderful opportunity to be grandparents with the love and kindness.”

The Four Weddings and a Funeral star ended her special note with, “Life is not always easy, but it can be very beautiful, especially if you work hard to find the beauty and you live in gratitude y’all have a beautiful day.”

Qualley and MacDowell married in 1986 and welcomed three children over the course of their marriage: Justin, Rainey, and Margaret. The former couple divorced in 1999. Qualley has kept his life mostly out of the public eye since then. MacDowell dated Dennis Quaid briefly and then married Rhett Hartzog, a former high school classmate, in 2001. They split in 2004.

In a 2023 interview, Margaret revealed that she urged her mother to watch The Parent Trap, hoping it would lead her parents to get back together. “She comes home and she’s like, ‘Margaret, I know how much you love The Parent Trap …’ And I was like, ‘Yeah?’ and waiting with bated breath, hoping my parents were getting back together,” Margaret told Harper’s Bazaar.  “And then in walks Dennis Quaid — her new boyfriend. I wasn’t living in Hollywood; I was living in a normal suburban town. But then I would have these ‘What in the world?’ moments.”
