It’s tragic rom-dram summer. A few weeks after Netflix’s My Oxford Year crushed our hearts, Prime Video put out its own tearjerker with The Map That Leads to You.

With gorgeous European cities as their backdrop, KJ Apa and Madelyn Cline‘s Jack and Heather fall into a whirlwind summer romance. Heather has a banking job waiting for her in New York, but she extends her trip to spend more time with Jack, who’s using his grandpa’s journal as a travel guide. Following J.P. Monninger’s 2017 book of the same name, Jack challenges Heather’s by-the-book outlook during the two weeks they spend together.

With her deadline looming, Heather has to decide what she wants to make of her future — and whether or not Jack will be in it. The only thing is, he’s hiding a secret that could change everything. On that ominous note, we don’t blame you if you’d rather know ahead of time if The Map That Leads to You has a sad or happy ending. Read on for Swooon’s full report.

Does Jack die in The Map That Leads to You?

Yep, that secret Jack is keeping is probably exactly what you think it is. Early on in the movie, he mentions in passing that he once had a “health scare.” When Jack makes a trip to a health clinic to treat his injured shoulder — long story — we find out that something’s seriously wrong. The scans reveal that Jack’s cancer has returned.

The Map That Leads to You, however, decides to leave things up in the air about Jack’s fate. Jack is still alive by the movie’s end, but his cancer is terminal.

Do Heather and Jack end up together?

Heather is left reeling after Jack abandons her at the airport, as he had planned to join her in New York. She doesn’t know why he did what he did, but viewers know that Jack got a call about his scan results right before boarding. Later, the movie reveals that not only has Jack left Heather behind, but he’s also started neglecting his relationships with his friends.

He finally sends Heather a letter explaining everything. He couldn’t ask her to watch him die, but he admits that he loves and still thinks about her. Heather immediately books a flight. He wrote that he was “dancing in the face of death,” and Heather put two-and-two together using the pages she kept of his grandfather’s journal. It mentions the Santa Pao festival in Bulgaria.

Somehow, she makes her way there and spots him in the crowd. During their emotional reunion, Jack warns Heather that he can’t give her a future, but she assures him that she doesn’t care and wants to be with him anyway. Right before the credits roll, they kiss as confetti rains down and people celebrate around them. The ending is bittersweet: We’ll never know exactly how much time Heather and Jack were able to spend together.
