‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ Boss Explains Why Alex Has a Major ‘Glow-Up’ in Season 2

When fans got their first look at My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2, they were quick to point out the glow-ups of the show’s characters — especially that of Ashby Gentry‘s Alex Walter. (Seriously, just check the comments on TikTok.)
It’s been a whole summer since Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) abandoned the Walter ranch for New York City, putting a pin in her messy love triangle with brothers Alex and Cole (Noah LaLonde). When Jackie finds herself back in Silver Falls, she discovers that things aren’t exactly how she left them, including her sort-of ex Alex. Walter Boys showrunner Melanie Halsall sat down with Swooon to talk Alex’s transformation ahead of Season 2, which drops on Thursday, August 28.
Halsall explained that Alex’s glow up hasn’t come out of nowhere. Viewers might remember that in Season 1, he was thinking about going to rodeo school in Montana. “I think it’s a very natural thing for young men to do, to go away for a summer and then come back and have grown six inches and got muscles and a tan all of a sudden because they were outside all summer,” she says. “I don’t think that’s unusual.”
Though Alex’s summer plans were already in motion before Jackie left, it helped him cope with her loss. “That’s going to give him this confidence because he’s discovering something he really loves,” she says. “That’s part of his way of trying to get over Jackie leaving unexpectedly at the end of Season 1.”
In that way, Alex’s shift isn’t just physical, but emotional, putting him in a different frame of mind in Season 2. “I think his glow-up is kind of both circumstantial and deliberate and he’s growing as a person,” Halsall says. “And it was important for the show because we wanted to obviously just show they all change.”
How will Alex’s transformation impact his relationship with Jackie? Fans will have to wait and see, but Halsall teases that Alex isn’t the only character to have grown since we last saw them. “They’ve all had their different developments in their certain ways,” she says. “I think Alex’s glow-up is probably the most visual and the most obvious in terms of how he looks, but all our characters have developed between that time [of Jackie leaving and coming back].”
