‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ Boss Breaks Down the Love Triangle’s Future After Season 2 Finale

Ashby Gentry,

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2.]

My Life with the Walter Boys had not one love confession this season, but two.

Jackie’s (Nikki Rodriguez) been torn between brothers Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry) almost as long as she’s lived in Silver Falls. She’s only ever been in an official relationship with Alex, which they start back up again in Season 2. But Jackie’s tension with Cole boils over in the final episode, and Alex bears witness to it. Showrunner Melanie Halsall spoke with Swooon to break down Season 2’s final moments and where the love triangle goes from here.

Noticing that Cole has been pulling away from her, Jackie confronts him. Cole admits that he knows that Jackie and Alex have been seeing each other in secret and questions why Jackie can stay away from him but not his brother. At that point, he can’t keep pretending that they’re just friends, and he tells Jackie he loves her for the first time. Reluctantly, because Jackie is scared of how out-of-control Cole makes her feel, she says it back.

Halsall notes that it was crucial for Cole to say those three little words first before Jackie could acknowledge her feelings. “I think at that point, they’ve been through so much together in Season 2, both so much together and so much apart,” she told Swooon. “She feels that confessing it will help. It will kind of make it go away almost.”

She continued, “And after everything that’s happened, and especially that happens in Episode 10, and with everything that’s been happening with Alex, I feel like Jackie feels that that’s the only thing left for them to say to each other. We kind of know it. They kind of know it. And she’s saying it as if there’s nothing we can do. ‘We can’t be together. I’m with your brother. But I want you to know.'”

It’s right then that Alex walks in on Jackie and Cole after overhearing Jackie’s confession. We find out in Season 2 that Alex suspected that there was something going on between them back in Season 1, so when Jackie admits that she kissed Cole back then, he feels vindicated. Eventually, Alex says he wants to move past it and be with her anyway, but now, how will he handle knowing that Jackie’s feelings run so deep for Cole?

“We’ll have to wait and see, obviously, but it’s certainly something he wasn’t expecting to hear,” Halsall teased. “And, of course, that’s going to have a huge impact on him and Jackie and Cole going forward for sure.”

Does Jackie truly love both of the brothers? After all, Jackie struggles to tell Alex she loves him back for a few episodes, even after they reconcile. Halsall confirmed that she’s definitely in love with both of them, albeit in different ways.

When it comes to Alex, she explained, “I think many of us have experienced a relationship that you really want to work out, that the person you’re with is perfect in every way and is great with you and lovely and you love them like a sibling or like a best friend, but that extra special saucy something isn’t there as much as you would like it to be.”

That’s where Jackie is with Alex in Season 2, but still, fans shouldn’t count him out. “She starts off that relationship fully in it and wants to be with him, but as time goes on, it becomes more of a… they’re trying really hard to be in it and to make that relationship feel the way it should feel when you’re madly in love with somebody. But I think she does love him.”

Alex, the showrunner noted, might be in the same boat as Jackie. “I’m not sure he’s aware of it,” she said. “I’m not sure Jackie’s aware of it either, to be honest. I don’t think they’re really conscious that that’s what they’re doing. I think until Jackie says ‘I love you’ to Cole at the very end, I don’t think she’s conscious of what it meant to be in love with Alex as well.”

Between Cole and Alex, Halsall told Swooon that she still wants them both to be equally solid options for Jackie. “Yes, there is definitely a pull towards Cole that Jackie feels because a lot of that has been kind of unexpressed, but Alex has had his glow up. He’s absolutely very desirable. They have a very passionate coming together and relationship in season two.”

Even though the showrunner already has an endgame in mind for Walter Boys, which she’s mapped out way down the line, it hasn’t become obvious yet. “So I definitely don’t think we were nailing any colors to the mast in terms of which way our story is going to end or which way we’re leaning for sure,” she says. “Everything’s still to play for.”
