Cameron Mathison is opening up about the end of his marriage like never before. The General Hospital star admitted that his reaction to his split from longtime wife Vanessa Mathison was one of total surprise.

The actor was candid with Jennie Garth on the latest episode of her I Choose Me podcast. Cameron admitted that “it was a tricky time” when he and Vanessa separated.

“There was a lot of specific conditions that made it really tough,” he said. “You know, you said it was a surprise to hear it for you. It was a surprise for me, too.”

He also revealed how the loss of his home in the Pacific Palisades fire affected his relationship with Vanessa in the wake of their breakup. “We had been separated for about a year and a half officially at that point. Maybe a little bit longer, but still felt very fresh,” Cameron said. “We’re still working through stuff.” When Jennie asked if the fire and the aftermath brought him and Vanessa closer together, the actor replied, “A thousand percent.”

The All My Children alum noted that he and Vanessa still “have a lot of love for each other, but there was also a lot of pain at that time.” After his home burned down in the Pacific Palisades fire, Cameron stayed with Vanessa at her place. He explained that this difficult time period “erased a lot of the negativity” between them.

He continued, “We kind of got to this real place of love and care and support, and we’re there for each other and cried and talked and hugged and not in a, ‘Oh we’re going to get back together kind of way,’ just like a really close… like nobody else knew what we were going through.”

The former couple, who share kids Lucas and Leila, announced their split in July 2024 after 22 years of marriage. During his appearance on costar Maurice Benard‘s State of Mind podcast in May 2025, Cameron discussed his “beautiful marriage” and how the split impacted their kids. “Things happen, things change, fell apart, [and] that broke their hearts,” he said at the time.
