‘Nashville’: Who Does Scarlett End Up With? Her Ending Explained

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Nashville.]

Nashville, which aired for six seasons from 2012 to 2018, is headed to Netflix! The beloved series was on ABC for its first four seasons, then CMT for its next two.

While Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere were the stars of the show, Clare Bowen was also a series regular for all six seasons. She played Scarlett, a soft-spoken aspiring singer whose uncle Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) had a complicated history with Britton’s Rayna.

During Season 1, Scarlett was involved in a bit of a love triangle with Avery (Jonathan Jackson) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio). She and Gunnar were together on-and-off throughout the series, but who did Scarlett end up with? Scroll down for a refresh.

Who did Scarlett end up with in Nashville?

Scarlett actually didn’t end up with anyone she dated throughout the course of the show. During the series finale, there was a flash-forward sequence, and it revealed that Scarlett was engaged to a complete mystery man.

Nothing was revealed about their relationship, except it should be noted that the new guy in her life was played by her real-life husband, Brandon Robert Young. The two tied the knot in October 2017. Young is also a singer/songwriter IRL. He and Bowen are a duo called Bowen Young.

Why didn’t Scarlett and Gunnar end up together on Nashville?

After the finale aired, Callie Khouri explained why Scarlett and Gunnar didn’t get a happy ending. Despite being one of the most fan-favorite couples of the show, Khouri decided not to have the two end up together.

“Sometimes the things you really want just don’t happen, and that was one of those things,” Khouri told Deadline. “I think it would’ve been a little too fairy tale. The person who looks the most like a fairy should not have the fairy tale ending.”

Gunnar did not have a romantic partner at the end of Nashville. Instead, he was focused on his band with Avery and Will (Chris Carmack).
