‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’: Do Sabrina & Harvey End Up Together in the Sitcom?

On September 27, 1996, Sabrina the Teenage Witch premiered on ABC and became a cultural phenomenon. The sitcom followed 16-year-old Sabrina Spellman (Melissa Joan Hart) as she navigated her newly-discovered witch powers — all while dealing with the highs and lows of high school — with the help of her aunts Zelda (Beth Broderick) and Hilda (Caroline Rhea), as well as her talking cat, Salem (voiced by Nick Bakay).
The early seasons of the show explored the sweet romance between Sabrina and the lovable Harvey Kinkle (Nate Richert). The series ran for seven seasons until 2003, and Sabrina went from high school to college and beyond. So, how did Sabrina and Harvey’s relationship fare throughout all those significant chapters in her life? Did they end up together in the series finale? Swooon is doing a refresher on Sabrina and Harvey’s romance in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Do Sabrina and Harvey end up together?
Yes, Sabrina and Harvey do end up together in the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series finale, but it wasn’t an easy road to endgame. The final episode chronicled the lead-up to Sabrina’s wedding to her then-boyfriend, Aaron (Dylan Neal).
On the day of her wedding, Sabrina began having doubts about marrying Aaron, especially after realizing their soul stones didn’t fuse together. Just before walking down the aisle, Sabrina’s dad (Doug Sheehan) noticed the “12:36” inscription on the bracelet she had on. Sabrina was shocked to see that she was wearing the bracelet Harvey had given her seven years ago. (Morgan had grabbed it from Sabrina’s jewelry box.) The time written on the bracelet was the exact time she and Harvey met.
Sabrina couldn’t complete her vows to Aaron, which made them both realize they weren’t ultimately soulmates. Sabrina ran out of the church to find Harvey leaning on his motorcycle, his soul stone in hand. She didn’t hesitate to kiss him and then hopped on the back of his motorcycle to jet off into the sunset with her first and only true love. They tossed their soul stones, and they connected instantly, two halves of a whole. Sabrina’s dad pointed out the time: 12:36 on the dot.
At 90s Con in 2024, Richert opened up about where Sabrina and Harvey would be today. “They’d obviously have kids and one of them would obviously have to be a witch at some point, of course,” Richert told Us Weekly.
Even though the show explored other love interests for Sabrina, Hart always believed Sabrina’s heart belonged to Harvey. “I feel like it always had to go back to Harvey,” Hart told TVLine. “And I think the way the writers handled it was really beautiful, that Sabrina made the decision on her own. When you watch Friends, you want Ross and Rachel together. When you watch How I Met Your Mother, you want Robin and Ted together. I think it was important to wrap it up that way.”
Why did Harvey leave the show?
Sabrina the Teenage Witch fans will recall that Harvey was a main character in the first four seasons of the show, and the Season 4 finale featured the pivotal moment of Harvey finally figuring out that Sabrina was a witch. When Season 5 picked up, Harvey was noticeably absent, and Sabrina explained that they had broken up.
“They revamped the show at one point and I got booted and then they brought me back for the last two episodes, it was crushing,” Richert revealed on the Pod Meets World podcast. He said he was told by higher ups that “we’ve exhausted the story lines for your character and we’re going in a different direction.”
Harvey’s absence didn’t last for too long. The character popped up at the end of Season 5, and Richert became a series regular again in Season 6. However, Harvey and Sabrina didn’t immediately get back together. Harvey actually started dating Sabrina’s roommate, Morgan (Elisa Donovan)! Despite their romantic history, Harvey and Sabrina always remained friends when they weren’t together.
Will there be a Sabrina the Teenage Witch revival?
It’s been over 25 years since Sabrina the Teenage Witch premiered. Despite so many revivals, Sabrina the Teenage Witch hasn’t gotten one — yet. Netflix did its own take on the Archie comics with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that didn’t include the original sitcom cast. (Broderick and Rhea did make a cameo appearance in the final season.) It’s also worth noting that Sabrina and Harvey, played by Kiernan Shipka and Ross Lynch, did not end up together in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
When Hart stopped by TV Insider in 2024, she wasn’t too keen on bringing Sabrina, Harvey, and the rest of the gang back because she’s satisfied with the original ending. “I don’t think it’s a good idea. I just think it ended so well. I don’t want to have to redo an ending, you know?” she said.
