‘Overcompensating’ Season 2: Lukas Gage Teases Benny & Sammy’s Romantic Future

If you’ve been worried about whether Sammy (Lukas Gage) would return in Overcompensating Season 2, you can rest easy.
We’ve been chomping at the bit for more information since the Prime Video show was renewed earlier this month, so when Gage was promoting Gilead’s HealthySexual campaign and his upcoming memoir, we asked about his hopes for Sammy’s future. What direction does he want his character’s relationship with Benny (Benito Skinner) to go?
First and foremost, Gage assured us that he’s already had some early conversations with Skinner, who doubles as the series’ creator. “I know that he’s just starting in the writers’ room, I think today, and we’ve had some good conversations,” the People We Meet on Vacation star told Swooon on September 28. “So it’s looking like Sammy’s story’s not over.”
Sammy haunts Season 1’s narrative, despite not physically being there most of the time. Benny thinks about his high school friend constantly, though viewers don’t find out what exactly went down between them until Episode 7. When Thanksgiving break rolls around, Benny runs into Sammy at their hometown bar and is forced to confront their falling out.
In high school, Sammy leaned in to kiss a closeted Benny, who pushed him away and called him a slur. After Benny apologizes and confirms that there definitely was romantic tension between them, the two make up… and makeout in the bathroom. A giddy Benny and Sammy plan to meet up again during winter break.
“I mean, I ship them together,” Gage said. “I think that they have a great relationship, and I think that Sammy can teach him a lot of things, and I think it’d be a safe person to do it with, and maybe it’s not the end goal, long game relationship, but maybe it’s a perfect first love to happen and a healthy heartbreak to have.”
Could Sammy get entangled in a love triangle next season, we wonder? Benny develops feelings for Miles (Rish Shah) in Season 1, though he hasn’t acted on them yet or confessed them. There’s also the complication of Sammy going to school in California. Still, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility, right?
When we posed the question to Gage, he didn’t confirm or deny anything, but he did say, “I love a love triangle, personally. It’s my favorite.”
