Hollywood has lost a legend. The indelible Diane Keaton died on October 11 at the age of 79. For more than five decades, the actress captivated viewers on the big screen with her unforgettable roles and became a fashion icon.

Over the course of her incredible life, did Keaton ever get married? The Family Stone matriarch was candid about her views on marriage through the years. Scroll down for a glimpse into her relationship history.

Did Diane Keaton have a husband?

No, Keaton did not have a husband. The Annie Hall star never married. “I think I’m the only one in my generation and maybe before who has been a single woman all her life,” she told People in 2019.

Why did Diane Keaton never get married?

The Something’s Gotta Give actress played plenty of wives onscreen, but she always knew it was the right decision not to get married. “I think that I never married because I didn’t want to get married. I didn’t choose to get married,” she said in a 1996 ABC News interview.

Keaton believed she “did the right thing” by not marrying her exes. “I don’t think we would have been very happy together,” she said.

In her 2019 interview with People, Keaton said that there was “something missing in me” and that she lacked a “nurturing” quality that being a wife would require of her.

“[I’m not sad] because I think that I needed more of a maternal aspect,” she noted. “I don’t think it would have been a good idea for me to have married, and I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure [my exes are] happy about it, too.”

She continued, “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife.’ And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.'”

Keaton’s mother also played a role in her decision to not marry. “I feel like she chose family over her dreams. And she was just the best mother, but I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married,” she told Lisa Kudrow for Interview magazine. “I didn’t want to give up my independence. By the way, no one has ever asked me to marry them, either, so that might be a good answer. I should’ve started with that and called it a day.”

Who was Diane Keaton in a relationship with?

At the time of her death, Keaton didn’t appear to be in a relationship with anyone. “I don’t date,” she told AARP in 2023. “Highly unlikely. I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So. I’d like to take you out.’ They don’t happen. Of course not.”

Keaton dated Woody Allen after she starred in the 1969 Broadway production of Play It Again, Sam, which he wrote. Their romantic relationship didn’t last, but they remained close friends throughout her life. They worked together on films like Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Manhattan Murder Mystery.

At the time, she wanted marriage, but he didn’t.

She was also once in a relationship with Warren Beatty. They were costars in the 1981 movie Reds, which Beatty also directed. “He is just a brilliant character,” she told People. “So complex and charming. He should have made more movies.”
