Britney Spears has been thrust back into the spotlight due to the upcoming release of her ex-husband Kevin Federline‘s memoir, You Thought You Knew. The singer and Federline share two sons: Sean Preston and Jayden James.

While Spears’ relationship with her now-adult children has been strained at times, she’s always remained adamant that she is a dedicated mother. With her family life back in the public eye, scroll down to learn more about Spears’ sons.

Who are Britney Spears’ sons?

Sean Preston (who goes by Preston) was born on September 14, 2005, and Jayden was born nearly one year later on September 12, 2006.

Since 2023, Preston and Jayden have been living in Hawaii with their dad. “It’s an opportunity for Kevin and his wife, and the boys are ready to get away from the L.A. microscope,” the former dancer’s lawyer explained to People at the time (Federline has been married to Victoria Prince since 2013, and they have two daughters).

Spears reportedly consented to the move, with a source telling the outlet, “Britney has always faithfully supported her children and wants them to be happy.” At the time that the family relocated, Preston had already finished high school, while Jayden had one year left, which he was able to finish remotely, per People’s report.

Does Britney Spears still pay child support?

No, Spears no longer pays child support now that Jayden is 18 and has graduated from high school. She made her final child support payment in November 2024, according to TMZ. Her and Federline’s agreement stated that the payments would continue until Jayden turned 18 or graduated high school, whichever came later. His graduation was in Hawaii in November 2024, according to TMZ’s report.

Per the outlet, Spears and Federline initially agreed that she would pay him $20,000 a month in child support, which was increased to $40,000 a month in 2018 since the boys were with Federline 100% of the time.

“Britney is extremely agitated and extremely concerned that Kevin is going to no longer allow her to see their children because he has sole custody as retribution for not agreeing to the $40,000 in child support payment, which would be a $20,000 increase from what he is getting now,” a source told Us Weekly at the time, although the amount was eventually upped.

When Jayden turned 18, the agreed-upon amount was changed back to $20,000 per month until the child support ended that November.

Did Britney Spears lose custody of her sons?

When Spears and Federline divorced in 2006, she asked for legal and physical custody of the boys. When the divorce was finalized the following July, they agreed to shared custody.

However, that October, Spears temporarily lost custody of the children amid legal and mental health issues. Federline was awarded sole custody in January 2008 after the pop star was placed on a 5150 hold. That spring, they came to a new agreement, which saw Federline maintain sole custody, with Spears receiving two visits and an overnight stay each week.

In August 2019, Spears and Federline’s custody agreement was altered once again, this time giving Federline 70% and Spears 30% of custodial rights, another source confirmed to Us Weekly.

What is Britney Spears’ relationship with her sons now?

Spears does not seem to have a close relationship with Jayden and Preston right now, although she’s said she would like to. In her October 16 Instagram post, she revealed that she’s only seen one of her sons for 45 minutes in the past five years, and the other for four visits in the past five years.

“From now on I will let them know when I am available,” she added, hinting that she hopes to repair the relationship in the future. Jayden and Preton spent time with Jamie Lynn Spears‘ family in September 2025 in honor of Jamie Lynn’s daughter’s senior night, which she documented on Instagram.

In December 2024, Spears reflected on a reunion with Jayden, whom she seemingly spent time with over the holidays. Along with recent photos of the now-adult, Spears wrote, “Mine forever !!! It’s weird we’re like twins but he’s a boy and I’m a girl !!! He’s mine I hadn’t seen him in 2 and half years or maybe 3 !!! I’m in shock !!! He came back and he feels older and smarter than me !!! He’s a man and I cry everyday of my life because of the miracle and genius he is !!! When he plays the whole earth shakes !!!”

Back in 2022, the boys sat down with ITV and spoke about their relationship with their mother. At the time, they were estranged. Jayden spoke on behalf of both then-teenagers in the interview and said he “100%” thought the relationship could be repaired.

He also cited his mom’s revealing social media photos as part of the reason for the estrangement. “It’s almost like she has to post something on Instagram to get attention,” he said. “This has gone on for years and years and years, and there’s a high chance that this is never going to really stop, but I’m hoping for me, maybe she will.”

The boys did not attend Spears’ wedding to Sam Asghari in 2022. “At the time, it just wasn’t a good time to go,” Jayden told Daily Mail. “I’m not saying that I’m not happy for her.” Spears and Asghari divorced in 2024.
