Did Danny & Baez Get Together in ‘Blue Bloods’? Your Relationship Refresher for ‘Boston Blue’

Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) is leaving the Big Apple behind for Boston. Nearly a year after the end of Blue Bloods, Danny is starting a new chapter on Boston Blue, which premieres October 17 on CBS.
But will Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) join him in Beantown? Blue Bloods fans will recall that Danny and Baez had known each other for years before she became his partner in Season 4. Throughout the rest of the show, no one could deny the chemistry between these two characters. The will-they-or-won’t-they energy in this procedural kept us all on the edge of our seats.
With Mr. Danny Reagan back in the picture, Swooon is revisiting the Danny-Baez relationship, where it left off in the Blue Bloods series finale, and what Boston Blue means for their future.
Did Danny and Baez end up together on Blue Bloods?
No, Danny and Baez did not end up together at the end of Blue Bloods’ 14-season run. There was plenty of opportunity after Baez became Danny’s partner and then Danny’s wife died (more on that below), but these characters were not a couple when the credits rolled on the series finale.
In the final episode, Danny and Baez fans were blessed with a crumb that things could possibly turn romantic between these two. Danny asked Baez out for pizza, and she said yes. It wasn’t a declaration of love or anything, but it was something.
The characters formed a close bond working together and putting their lives on the line. When Baez adopted a baby girl in Season 12, Danny sweetly told Baez that he would always be a shoulder of support for her. “If you need anything, ever, I’m here for you,” Danny told her.
Wahlberg was pretty adamant about why a Danny and Baez romance shouldn’t happen. “We’d never see them onscreen together, and all they would do is make them fight,” the actor told Swooon. In his eyes, “Danny and Baez are already a couple. They go to dinner together, they hang out together. He’s godfather to her new baby. They’re already a couple.”
Showrunner Kevin Wade previously acknowledged to TV Insider that Danny and Baez had “a lot of chemistry together” but wasn’t sure if a romance was the right call. “Donnie and Marisa, no matter what we write, manage to find ways to show that the two like each other more than as partners,” Wade said. “Let’s put it at that. They’re very good at engineering a subtextual relationship that the audience clearly gets.”
Ramirez shared a similar viewpoint. She told TV Insider that Danny and Baez were “happiest” as work partners, and if they waded into a romantic relationship, they would probably not be able to work together. “I know that fans do want that romance, but I think it’s more fun to just kind of tease whether we can go there or not,” she said.
Did Danny and Baez ever kiss?
Danny and Baez have never kissed. It’s been purely platonic between these two. These partners have clearly read the same coworkers manual as Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) from the Law & Order universe.
Despite their chemistry, Danny and Baez never crossed the line into romantic territory with a lip lock. Could Boston Blue change that? Time will tell.
Are Danny and Baez together on Boston Blue?
It’s unclear if Ramirez will reprise her role as Baez on Boston Blue. She is not a series regular, though. Danny has a new partner in Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). If Baez is no longer his partner, maybe they’re finally exploring the possibility of venturing outside platonic territory.
What happened to Danny’s wife?
Linda Reagan (Amy Carlson) was killed in a helicopter crash between Seasons 7 and 8 of Blue Bloods. Carlson opted not to renew her contract after Season 7, which led to Linda’s exit.
Danny opened up to his therapist about the shocking loss in the Season 8 premiere. “Linda’s death wasn’t your fault. She was doing her job [as a nurse]. She died doing what she loved,” the therapist told Danny at the time. “She died in a helicopter crash, airlifting her patient.”
