[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of We Were Liars.]

Now that We Were Liars is officially returning to Prime Video for Season 2, fans are eager to know how much of the series’ next season will come from the plot of E. Lockhart‘s second Sinclair family novel, Family of Liars.

On September 17, Prime Video officially announced that Season 2 of We Were Liars is on the way. Looking at the end of Season 1, when viewers learned that Carrie Sinclair (Mamie Gummer) could see the ghost of her son Johnny (Joseph Zada), similar to her niece, Season 1 main character Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind), Beechwood Island has definitely left viewers with more questions than answers. While some of those answers can be found in Lockhart’s Family of Liars. However, it was unclear how much of Lockhart’s book would serve as the basis of Season 2 — until now.

Leading up to the publication of the series’ newest novel, We Fell Apart, Lockhart sat down with Swooon to reveal what fans can expect from the show’s highly anticipated second season. Scroll to find out everything we learned about We Were Liars Season 2 from author E. Lockhart.

Will Season 2 of We Were Liars follow the plot of Family of Liars?

As Lockhart put it, “The story of my novel Family of Liars will definitely be folded into Season 2, but it is not the only thing going on.” That means that while the flashback story of the Sinclair sisters’ teenage years will be included in the season, readers can anticipate new Sinclair material as well.

“I know that the showrunners have a lot of new twists and turns and surprises up their sleeves,” Lockhart continued, “so people who have read Family of Liars can expect to see all of the juicy story of the moms that they are wanting to see on screen, but there will be new stuff.”

Will the Liars return for Season 2?

As readers of Family of Liars know, while Johnny makes brief appearances in the book, Cadence, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), and Mirren (Esther McGregor) do not. However, Lockhart revealed to Swooon that while fans knew that Johnny was coming back, she can confirm “Cadence is coming back,” too.

If Johnny’s ghost can pop up for Carrie, surely that means Gat and Mirren can continue to haunt Beechwood (and Cadence) as well. When we asked Lockhart if Gat and Mirren would pop up as well, she could not confirm or deny. She teased, “I don’t know…”

Who has been cast as the young Carrie, Penny, and Bess Sinclair?

As of right now, Lockhart confirmed that Season 2 is still being written, so casting has yet to begin. That being said, casting may already have some actresses in mind from last season’s auditions. Lockhart told Swooon, “I mean, we saw so many amazing actresses in the casting process. For Cadence and Mirren, we just saw a huge range of people, like different types, some were comics, some were dramatic, some were kind of indie vibes, some more commercial, but just like a huge, huge range of talent. So I feel like the list is long of people that we would be very excited to have back, but I can’t really name any names.”
