How did Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell meet?
The couple met at a dinner party for Shauna Robertson‘s birthday in 2007 (Robertson served as a producer on Bell’s 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall). However, they weren’t immediately smitten with one another, and Bell confirmed there were “no sparks” after the initial meeting.
Bell didn’t know who Shepard was at the time and later recalled on Sunday Today, “The only thing I remember is that he talked so much.” She also revealed that they were both fresh out of relationships at the time of their first encounter.
Meanwhile, Shepard told Good Housekeeping, “When I met her and her friends, I was suspicious of their unbridled happiness. I thought, ‘Something stinks here. They’re in a cult.'”
Two weeks later, they crossed paths again at a Detroit Red Wings game and bonded over both being from Michigan. Shepard asked Robertson for Bell’s number and shot her a text. After three months of dating, Shepard wasn’t ready to commit and was still casually dating other people, but four days after telling this to The Good Place star, he realized he’d made a mistake and they’ve been together ever since.
In 2009, Shepard proposed, which Bell reciprocated in 2013 after the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in California. They tied the knot later that year.

Shepard and Bell keep their daughters out of the public eye as much as possible and do not share their faces on social media. “My feeling is that I chose a career in the public eye. I chose to be quoted, I chose to have my picture taken,” she explained in 2020. “I don’t know them yet. I don’t know if they will want that. So I really don’t have the right to choose for them.”
