Things didn’t work out between Debbie Siebers and Mel Owens on The Golden Bachelor. Mel ended their relationship by sending Debbie home during the Wednesday, October 22, episode.
Following her elimination, Debbie opened up to Swooon and other media outlets about dating and whether she’d be down to be the next lead on The Golden Bachelorette.
Of the latter, she said, “I would definitely consider it. I mean, how could I possibly pass up an opportunity like that?” However, she noted that it would certainly be “challenging,” as she saw how much Mel struggled to make his decisions throughout the season.
“But I also feel it would be an extraordinary opportunity because, listen, I’ve gone to matchmakers, where they they do all the work, right? And so at least you know certain things about a person, instead of going in completely blind,” Debbie continued. “And this, I know for a fact they vet you quite a while, and you have to really go through a lot to be considered. So just the whole idea that there would be all these potential men that are vetted that, OK, I’m not meeting these guys randomly, where they’re pretending to be somebody they’re not, you know what I’m saying? They’re being forthright with you. That would be something, wouldn’t it?”
Since filming The Golden Bachelor over the summer, Debbie has “not been dating,” she admitted, although, she added, “I don’t even think we’re allowed to until the show is over.”
That time is coming (next week is the Women Tell All special followed by the finale on November 5), and Debbie said she is “so ready” to get back out there.
“After going through this experience and opening my heart and knowing that I’m capable of feeling these things again, I miss it,” she admitted .”I miss holding hands. I realized, gosh, I just miss kissing someone and hugging someone and just going to dinner.”
Debbie reflected on her one-on-one dinner date with Mel, which she said was “so special” and made her realize that she wants a “companion” to do the “simplest things” in life with. “I want someone to wake up with and… just the simplest things,” she said. “Just go for a walk in the park or go for a weekend trip or something. And I haven’t had that in so long. It’s crazy, and it’s not like I haven’t tried and I haven’t put myself out there because I have. And it’s just leads to disappointment and frustration and guys ghost me. I don’t get it.”
Debbie’s hometown date was quite emotional, as she opened up to Mel about her ex taking his own life shortly after their breakup. Debbie, who is now 65, revealed she knew her ex was going to propose right before she turned 51. However, she noted that he dealing with depression and said she started “seeing this behavior” that she described as “pretty heavy.”
After “[trying] to break up with him a few times,” Debbie and her then-boyfriend saw a therapist together, which is how she got the “strength to walk away.” “Like, two weeks later, the horrible thing is, he took his life, and it altered me forever,” she added. It wasn’t until she was able to work through that pain and guilt that she was ready to date again.
