‘Hunger Games’: Should Finnick & Annie’s Story Be the Next Prequel? Sam Claflin Says… (VIDEO)

What To Know

  • Sam Claflin addresses the possibility of a prequel book focusing on Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta.
  • Finnick became Annie’s mentor for the 70th Hunger Games, and they fell in love.
  • Claflin would like to see a prequel explore Finnick’s life in the Capitol after winning his Games.

Suzanne CollinsHunger Games prequel books have told the origin stories of President Snow and Haymitch Abernathy. If she plans to write a third novel and make it a prequel trilogy, who should be the subject? If you ask Sam Claflin, it should be Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta.

Claflin’s performance as Finnick in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay films remains a fan-favorite. The actor opened up about his hopes for a Finnick and Annie spinoff story when he came to the Swooon and TV Insider office to discuss his new series, Harlan Coben’s Lazarus. In the video above, he explained why he feels Finnick and Annie’s story should be told on the page and onscreen as the third installment of the prequel franchise (Sunrise on the Reaping‘s film adaptation is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026).

“I think Finnick’s story” should be the third tale, Claflin told Swooon, namely “his time in the Capitol, even opening with him in the Games and winning the Games and then exploring his journey through the things that he was put through.”

As fans know, Finnick was forced into prostitution in the Capitol after he won the 65th Hunger Games. Finnick was Annie’s mentor when she competed in the 70th Hunger Games. She became its victor, but the events inside the arena left Annie deeply traumatized, and she lived with extreme PTSD afterwards. Finnick and Annie eventually fell in love, but then Finnick was sent back into the arena in the 75th year, the Quarter Quell, with his former mentor, Mags Flanagan, who eventually sacrificed herself to save Finnick. The tributes’ rebellion saved Finnick, Katniss Everdeen, and more from dying in the Quarter Quell, and Finnick and Annie married in District 13 later on. Finnick died fighting against the Capitol in Mockingjay, and Annie raised their son in District 4 after the rebels won the war.

Claflin added, “I think exploring the Capitol more and that world and all the secrets and the corruption would be really, really interesting, and seeing Finnick as a mentor and meeting Annie. There’s a lot to play with, but, you know, Suzanne, it’s not up to me.

We suggested a Finnick trilogy that shows his Hunger Games, his life in the Capitol after (including life with Annie), and leading up to the events of Catching Fire. There’s definite fan interest in seeing Finnick and Annie’s love story.

“I think so,” Claflin agreed, suggesting that this could be its own TV series. “People seem to really, really fall for that.”
