[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Chad Powers, Season 1 Episode 6, “6th Quarter.”]
Season 1 of Chad Powers has come to a close, but we’ll need Season 2 expeditiously if we’re going to find out what’s next for comeback kid Russ (Glen Powell) and coach Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) after she uncovered his true identity.
As viewers saw this season, Russ disguised himself as the titular Chad in order to win a walk-on spot as the quarterback of the South Georgia Catfish football team. In doing so, the disgraced player, who was essentially canceled by the sports world and masses years before, made a connection and turned a corner by reinventing his life.
The problem? He’d begun to form strong bonds with his team and coach Ricky, who happens to be the daughter of head coach Jake Hudson (Steve Zahn). After a moment of self-doubt, Russ had a one-night stand with a woman he met at a bar, only to learn she was Jake’s wife, Wendy (Megan Ketch).

When she revealed her hookup with Russ, Jake’s resulting heart attack forced him to slip up on his disguise in front of Ricky, and she ultimately confirmed his identity. The betrayal cut deep for Ricky, and at first, Russ ran away, but he returned eager to play. Ricky was still adamant about reporting Russ until he threatened that doing so would ruin the season and her dad’s reputation.
All season, the pair had a romantic tension that seemed to boil over as it transformed into hate on her side. She ultimately allowed Russ to play in the season’s final moments, but is there room for redemption or romance in their future? While Season 2 hasn’t been ordered, we’re dying to know.
As for whether the stars think we can root for romance, Mattfeld cites Russ and Ricky’s genuine friendship, which is clearly broken by his lie. “Maybe even more heartbreaking than anything is the fact that she really felt… connected with someone that saw her and believed in her, and that friendship betrayal is [tough].” Still, Mattfeld adds, “There’s plenty of places to go from there, so we’ll see.”
Russ and Ricky have their final confrontation on the team bus, which is extremely tense. “I think when you look at Perry Mattfeld, who’s like one of the most extraordinary actors, not only just a genuine human being, but puts up a performance in this show… she’s really tough, and the order that we had to give her on this one when she auditioned for this… I remember [thinking] ‘Thank god,’ because she’s an authentic coach, but also she has every gear at her disposal,” Powell gushes.
“[She] really turned on the gas on that scene,” he adds. “You see the vulnerability and the hurt.”
Can they make a comeback together in a second season? Stay tuned for any news on a renewal and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
