We were completely swept away by Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten) and James Beaufort’s (Damian Hardung) romance in Maxton Hall Season 1. As we devoured the first six episodes, we were consumed by so many questions: Would James and Ruby finally go from enemies to lovers? (Spoiler alert: They did.) Could their love last despite coming from different worlds? (That remains to be seen.)
All the while, there was one non-romance question that kept nagging at us. Prime Video’s YA drama is entirely in German. Though it’ll occasionally throw in an English line or two, the characters don’t speak any other language. At the same time, Ruby and James take a quick drive into London in Episode 3. (If one were to take a train from Germany to London, it would take at least 10 hours.) Then, the Maxton Hall students head to Oxford University toward the end of the season. Needless to say, that’s a famously English place.

Where does the Maxton Hall series take place?
We won’t hold you in suspense: Maxton Hall does indeed take place in London, despite the characters speaking German. The book trilogy it’s based on is written by a German author, and it was only available in German until English translations were released this year. The fictional Maxton Hall is one of England’s most prestigious private schools. It’s outside of London, but still within driving distance. Mystery solved!
Where is Maxton Hall filmed?
It’s a German production with German actors, so naturally, most scenes are shot in the same country. Marienburg Castle, which is located near Hanover in Lower Saxony, is a principal location. You’ll recognize it as the fictional Maxton Hall. (Yes, it is really as magical as it looks on screen.) The show also went to Berlin for several scenes in Season 1.

Since the story is set in England, some scenes were actually shot there, too. Oxfordshire and London were two filming sites during Season 1, so when Ruby and James complete their Oxford interviews — well, James doesn’t, but that’s beside the point — they are actually walking the halls of the famous university.
