Chip and Joanna Gaines have experienced plenty of significant life changes recently, especially with their daughter, Ella, heading off to college. As their kids get older and their day-to-day family life evolves, the couple has decided to step into a new chapter.
The Fixer Upper alums put their heads together to figure out a new way to keep their family united. After some pondering, Chip and Joanna settled on a move that will help their family in the years to come.
The couple has purchased a mountain house in Colorado after visiting as a family every year for spring break. “Somewhere along the way Chip and I started to wonder if Colorado was meant to be a bigger part of our family’s future,” Joanna wrote for Magnolia Journal. “With the kids getting older and going off to colleges in different directions, we kind of loved the idea of having a central place where we could all gather together, a place with all the same comfort and intention and care as the farmhouse in Waco.”
Joanna hopes that the mountain house will be more than just a “gathering place” for her family. “I could see our parents and extended families here on weekend getaways, wanderlusting their hearts out,” she said. “And friends who feel like family make themselves at home. I could see this place outliving us, housing our kids and their families on spring breaks decades from now…From a practical perspective, the house had just the right blend of good bones and square footage that we love in a project—not to mention a classically rustic, cozy cabin feel that we could easily sink into.”
Her oldest daughter, Ella, is designing the cottage on the property. Joanna raved that her daughter has “really come into her own when it comes to developing her own personal style.” She added, “It was so sweet to share this experience with her before she went off to college.”
This mountain house has something for the entire family. There’s a river behind the property, which Joanna noted is the “dreamiest spot” for Chip and their youngest son, Crew, to keep fly fishing.
Chip and Joanna’s journey to create this idyllic getaway house for their family will be chronicled in Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House, which premieres on December 9. The three-part limited series marks the couple’s first-ever Fixer Upper project outside Texas. The Magnolia Journal Winter 2025 Issue hits newsstands on Friday, November 14, and can be purchased online now.
