On Monday, November 17, John Cena will wrestle in his final WWE Monday Night Raw match at Madison Square Garden. As he gears up for his retirement from wrestling in December, Cena will undoubtedly have the support of his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh.
The Peacemaker star was previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009 to 2012, then in a relationship with Nikki Garcia (formerly Nikki Bella) from 2012 to 2018. Although Cena said in 2016 that he didn’t want to get married again, he eventually changed his mind and proposed to the Total Divas star the following year. However, they never made it down the aisle and split in 2018.

Who is John Cena’s wife?
Shariatzadeh was born in Iran and works as an engineer. She started working at Sonatype, an enterprise software company, in December 2019. It’s unclear if she’s still employed now that she is married to Cena.
Her professional career began after she graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering in 2013. “I have always enjoyed math and physics,” she told Avigilon. “My brother studied engineering in school, and I remember one day he came home with a project, and it was an autonomous car, and that was it!”
How did John Cena meet his wife?
Cena and Shariatzadeh first went public with their relationship in March 2019 when photos of them holding hands in Canada surfaced. They first met the previous month because he was in Vancouver, where she lives, filming a movie. He went to a local dive bar with a friend to watch his favorite football team, the New England Patriots, play in the Super Bowl.
“In walks a group of four, and I can’t take my eyes off of Shay,” Cena explained on What’s Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon. “And she wasn’t supposed to be there either. I wasn’t at a happening place. They just wanted to go. So they walked in. They’re in the booth right across from us, so I’m watching their TV, they’re watching mine.”
He said he didn’t have the “bravery to break the ice,” but when the game ended, one of Shariatzadeh’s friends asked him for a photo. “It’s like, ‘Hey, can I have a picture with you?’ I’m like, Only if I can get a picture with her,'” Cena shared. They exchanged phone numbers, and Cena told Shariatzadeh, “I need to spend more time with you.'” She agreed. They met up at the same local bar just days later and were there for seven hours before getting kicked out.
Cena revealed on The Howard Stern Show that he proposed after one year of dating. “I would have done it in three months,” he admitted. “It might have been a little weird, yes. I don’t want to speak for her, but she didn’t say no when I asked.”
Why don’t John Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh have kids?
Cena has been open about not wanting kids, which was the main point of contention in his relationship with Garcia. At one point, he told Garcia he would have his vasectomy reversed because she wanted to start a family, but in the end, they ended up splitting before having any children together.
In a 2024 interview, Cena reiterated, “I don’t want [kids]. I have a certain curiosity about life, and I also know the investment that it takes. And my biggest fear is, as someone who’s driven, many times stubborn and selfish, I try to approach the world with kindness and curiosity, but I don’t think I’m personally ready, nor will I ever be, to invest the time it needs to be a great parent because I want to live life for all it is.”
He also made it clear that this is something he and his wife, who have a 14-year age difference, have discussed. “I have a wonderful partner I do [life] with,” Cena added. “We’ve had open conversations about this. We share the same values.”
The actor explained that he brought up the conversation about kids on the “first or second date” with his future bride. “It’s great because we both got to lean into these uncomfortable moments, address this stuff, and build a foundation,” he explained.
