On November 17, Nintendo finally released three first-look images for its upcoming movie, The Legend of Zelda, based on the video game series by the same name. Since the film is set to follow the franchise’s legendary hero, Link, and heroine, Zelda, we couldn’t help but take a deeper dive into the Hyrule duo’s relationship. After all, we are hopeless romantics first — and gamers second.

What is The Legend of Zelda about?
According to Deadline, the movie “centers on elf-like warrior Link and Princess Zelda who team up to fight Ganon, a former warlord-turned-evil-demon-king, and save the magical land of Hyrule.” This plot greatly differs from early Zelda games, where Link was often seen protecting Princess Zelda from Ganon, or his human form, Ganondorf, much like Mario’s dynamic with Princess Peach and Bowser. We’re thrilled to see Princess Zelda take a greater role in fighting for Hyrule, as she has in more recent games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Are Link and Zelda in love?
Perhaps Nintendo’s greatest case of siblings-or-dating, fans have long wondered if Link and Zelda are an item, without receiving tangible evidence in either direction. Over time, fans have agreed that it is implied that Link and Zelda are in love. However, others feel that their relationship status is left ambiguous on purpose. Seeing that sleeping in the same bed during The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is as close to canon as their relationship gets, we’re incredibly curious to see how the film addresses their dynamic.

Who has been cast in The Legend of Zelda?
According to the movie’s producer, Shigeru Miyamoto, who created some of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, including The Legend of Zelda and Mario, filming has already begun for the two leads. Seventeen-year-old actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who voiced the title character in Disney’s 2022 live-action movie Pinocchio and starred in The Haunting of Bly Manor, will lead the movie as Link. Actress Bo Bragason, 21, best known for the Disney+ series Renegade Nell, will play his opposite as Princess Zelda.
On Nintendo’s social media, Miyamoto wrote, “This is Miyamoto. We have officially begun filming the live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda in the magnificent great outdoors, together with Bo Bragason, who plays Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays Link.”

When does The Legend of Zelda come out?
Looks like we’re going to wait a little bit longer to see Zelda and Link on the big screen. While the movie was initially set for a March 2027 release, Miyamoto updated fans on November 17 with a later premiere date. He stated, “The filming is progressing smoothly, so I would appreciate it if you could quietly watch over us. The theatrical release is scheduled for May 7, 2027. Please wait just a little longer.”
