Erica Kane had many loves on All My Children, but only one man had Susan Lucci‘s heart. The soap legend was happily married to the love of her life, Helmut Huber, for 53 years, until Huber’s death in 2022.
In a new interview, Lucci made rare comments about her late husband and the new chapter she’s embracing. She made an important decision about her future and the home she lived in with her husband for over 40 years.
“After I lost my husband, I asked myself, ‘Am I supposed to sell and buy a condo? Should I move to the city?’ In the end, I realized how much I value this house,” she told Architectural Digest about her home in Garden City on Long Island.
Lucci and her late husband moved into the home in 1978. After he died, she decided to renovate the 7,000-square-foot home. “I see my husband everywhere—but in a good way. I decided to redo it and make it a happy place,” she noted.
Notable changes included revamping the exterior with white siding and cobalt-blue shutters, adding a pergola, and transforming her attic into a lavish dressing room. “It’s the whole third floor, so I am able to store all my gowns in a very orderly fashion,” Lucci said about her new dressing room. “It makes me smile when I walk up there.”
Ten months after Huber’s death, Lucci opened up about her painful loss. “Everybody’s different, and I just miss him and he’s worth missing. He was really, really the love of my life,” she told Good Day New York.
Huber and Lucci married in 1969. They had two children together, Liza Huber and Andreas Huber. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lucci would share adorable videos of Huber cooking in their kitchen. The couple met while working at the Garden City Hotel, where Huber was the executive chef. They dated for just three weeks before getting married.
