Kelsea Ballerini is returning to the CMA Awards for a performance of her new song “I Sit in Parks” on Wednesday, November 19. She released the track as part of her six-song EP, Mount Pleasant, on November 14.
It’s one of Ballerini’s most vulnerable songs ever and features her singing about her desire to have children. However, her feelings on that subject have seemingly changed over the last few years. She previously spoke about kids following her 2022 divorce from Morgan Evans.

Does Kelsea Ballerini have kids?
No, Ballerini does not have children. She was 24 when she married Evans, who was eight years her senior. While appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast in February 2023, Ballerini said that different timelines for kids were a catalyst for the divorce.
“The moment I think it was over over was I was realizing I wasn’t ready for kids,” Ballerini admitted. “That’s a fundamental difference.” She revealed that she and her ex-husband “talked about” kids early on, but said she was “changing” her mind about them.

“He was ready,” Ballerini explained. “He was like, ‘I don’t want to be an old dad. And I’m like, ‘I’m just not there yet. I can’t do this to save us. I can’t do that to myself.'”
She recalled a conversation she had with Evans over dinner after she went to a doctor to discuss freezing her eggs without telling him. “I was like, ‘For my 30th birthday, I want to freeze my eggs,’ and that was not a good day,” Ballerini revealed. “I think that was when I was like… there’s a fundamental difference here that has happened and that has shifted. It was no longer just, ‘I don’t see this person, I miss this person, I’m alone and lonely.’ It was… he wants something out of life and I’m not there.”
At the time, she said, “I still don’t know if I want kids at all or not.”
What is Kelsea Ballerini’s ‘I Sit in Parks’ about?
Now, nearly three years later, Ballerini seems to have a different view, which she sings about on “I Sit in Parks.” The song begins with the CMA Award nominee sitting in a park (of course), watching a family with two young kids and comparing her life to the mother in front of her.
She then dives into the chorus. Ballerini fears she’s lost her chance to have kids because she’s spent the last several years chasing her dream of becoming a singer. “Did I miss it? By now is it a lucid dream?” she wonders. “Is it my fault for chasing things a body clock doesn’t wait for? I did the damn tour, it’s what I wanted, what I got, I spun around and then I stop and wonder if I missed the mark.”
Perhaps the most to-the-point lyric, though, is in the second verse: “I wonder if she wants my freedom like I wanna be a mother.”
Who is Tarryn in Kelsea Ballerini’s ‘I Sit in Parks’?
The song ends with Ballerini comparing herself to those close to her who are already having kids. “Tarryn’s due in June, the album’s due in March,” she concludes, referencing the deluxe version of her 2024 album Patterns, which came out in March.
In a full-circle moment that ties into the rest of the song, Ballerini laments that work has basically been her “baby,” while others in her orbit are in a very different place.
The “Tarryn” referenced in the song is Ballerini’s longtime makeup artist, Tarryn Feldman, who had her baby earlier this year. She is based in Nashville and has also worked with stars including Gabby Barrett, Hannah Brown, Tori Kelly, and many others.
