Is Sidelined 2: Intercepted the last we’ll see of Drayton (Noah Beck) and Drayton (Siena Agudong)? The sequel’s ending left their romantic fate up in the air, and a third movie hasn’t been announced yet. Regardless, the two leads, as well as director Justin Wu, have already started thinking about what they want to see for the characters.

In a joint interview with Agudong, Beck told Swooon that he hopes that Dallas and Drayton’s self-discovery journeys continue. “Because I think that’s the pursuit of life, right?” he said. “You’re constantly trying to figure out who you are, what’s meant for you, what you’re doing on this planet. You know what I mean?”

Though Beck kept all talk of Sidelined 3 hypothetical, he added, “It’s going to be really interesting to find that balance of, alright, if they do end up together, I want it to be because they choose each other and not just because it’s that [fairy] tale ending… I want her to go do her thing as long as she’s happy. I want them to test this out. Like, see if it works, and if it does, great. I’m happy for her. But if it doesn’t, she knows where I’ll be.”

Romance aside, Beck thinks Drayton needs to fully commit to playing football and seeing where that dream takes him. “And if I meet someone that way, then great,” he said, “but then I think it’s going to be really interesting to play with the writers of how we get our characters to choose one another, as opposed to just being with each other for the convenience.”

As for Agudong, the actress confirmed that she still wants to see a Dallas and Drayton endgame, even though they didn’t manage to get back together yet. She added that she hopes her character specifically reaches a point where she feels free. “There’s moments of that in the sequel, which was really nice to find,” Agudong said. “And I hope that we find her in a place where she’s free of judgment, and she’s able to admit that she doesn’t know what she’s doing, and that’s totally okay and exciting. I hope that, literally, she’s dancing, but also through life.”

In a separate interview, their director explained that while the first movie is about first love, the second is about discovering who you are, including what your dreams and priorities are. “Of course, what I say is just my interpretation, but yeah, there are so many areas I want to investigate,” he said. “If there were to be a third movie and beyond, I really want to investigate what life is like after you’ve achieved your dream.”

Love would be the throughline of all three movies, Wu said, but there would always be a bigger question being posed. “Let’s imagine, for instance, we time jump forward, perhaps five years from now, and Drayton is in the NFL. Dallas perhaps is a movie star. They’ve achieved the dream. Are they satisfied, and are they happy?” he wondered. “It’s less a question about will-they-won’t-they get back together. That, of course, is what we want to see happen, but it’s about the questions that pull them apart or bring them back together.”
