What To Know
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 premieres on Wednesday, December 10.
- The season adapts author Rick Riordan’s Sea of Monsters, the second book in his series.
- The book includes a number of iconic Percy and Annabeth scenes that we hope make it into the season.
[The following contains MAJOR spoilers for The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan.]
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is almost here, so you know what that means: Percabeth is about to make their onscreen return! Percy (Walker Scobell) and Annabeth’s (Leah Sava Jeffries) relationship is one of the many reasons that Rick Riordan’s book series of the same name has stuck with readers so many years later. (Yours truly, for one, has been rooting for Percabeth ever since she read The Lightning Thief all the way back in the third grade. In fact, they were the first characters I ever shipped together.)
Reliving Percabeth is one of the many reasons I’m locked into Disney+’s TV show, which starts rolling out Season 2 episodes on Wednesday. While we still have a ways to go until Percy and Annabeth realize their feelings for each other, Sea of Monsters definitely offers some iconic moments for the duo. In honor of Season 2’s adaptation of Sea of Monsters, I’ve done my reread and pinpointed all of the best Percabeth moments that I’m hoping make it into the show. Without further ado:
Annabeth arrives at Meriwether Prep
Thanks to the footage that’s already been released from Season 2, we know that Tyson calls out Percy for holding onto a photo of Annabeth, so I hope the rest of the Meriwether Prep scene plays out like it does in the book. The school bully notices Percy staring at said photograph, which Annabeth took during her Washington D.C. vacation and emailed to Percy.
Then, when Annabeth arrives at Meriwether Prep, she gets a stellar hero entrance, saving Percy from the cannibal giants that infiltrate his gym class. However, she makes sure to punch the school bully before she embarks on her rescue, in typical Annabeth fashion. She reveals also that she’s been spying on him all morning, waiting for the right moment to talk to him. It flusters them both.
Annabeth and Percy are put on dishwashing duty
This one’s a smaller Percabeth moment and not an end-all-be-all for me, but it’s still cute. Annabeth and Percy are on the bad side of camp’s new leader, Tantalus, so he punishes them for the Stymphalian birds’ attack during the chariot race. He gives them kitchen duty alongside the harpies, who use lava to wash instead of water. They don heavy-duty gloves and aprons, and they bond over their common enemy. Percy also uses their time together to convince Annabeth that his dreams about Grover being in danger are real.
Annabeth tells Percy about the prophecy
Annabeth deciding that she can’t keep the truth from Percy is an important moment for the two of them. About halfway through Sea of Monsters, right after Clarisse’s ship is destroyed and Tyson is presumed to have died in the explosion, Annabeth apologizes for her mistrust of Tyson. Percy admits to himself that he can’t stay mad at her anymore right before he asks her point-blank about what the Great Prophecy says about him, and she gives in.
Annabeth saves Percy from Circe
Who doesn’t love an Annabeth-rescues-Percy moment? First, I have to mention, Annabeth gets a fancy dress from C.C. — before they realize that they’re in danger. When Percy sees her, he admits that he would’ve been tongue-tied by her new look, if he hadn’t been turned into a guinea pig by that point. When Annabeth works out that Circe has captured them, she breaks out of the trance the sorceress put her in. She eats one of Hermes’ magic-immunity vitamins before feeding them to Percy and the other men-turned-guinea pigs.
Most importantly, Percy’s rescue culminates in a Percabeth hug. She launches herself at him when he tries to apologize for his idiotic move, reassuring him that she’s only “glad [he’s] not a guinea pig.” Aw.

Percy rescues Annabeth from sirens
When the sirens come into play a short while later, the tables turn. Annabeth wants to hear the sirens’ song so that she can find out what she truly desires, so she makes Percy tie her to the mast. She manages to escape her binds and starts swimming towards her demise, but Percy jumps in after her. When he touches her, Percy also gets a glimpse of Annabeth’s dream scenario: She’s rebuilt New York in her image, and she’s having a picnic in Central Park with her parents and Luke. Snapping out of it, Annabeth is saved from drowning when Percy configures an air bubble around them.
A teaser clip hints that maybe Season 2 will adjust this fan-favorite book moment slightly. There’s a brief glimpse of Percy being tied to the ship, so maybe Annabeth restrains him in her trance, making his rescue more difficult. I hope that means we’re in for more Percabeth angst!
Percy saves Annabeth with the Fleece
Speaking of angst, Percy nearly loses it when Annabeth is injured in their fight against Polyphemus. He quickly thinks to grab the Fleece to save her. The drama isn’t that drawn out in the book, but we have high hopes for the show. Give us desperate Percy, STAT!
Annabeth and Percy win the chariot race 2.0
As much as I love the aforementioned angst, I also love happy, untroubled Percabeth. One such moment occurs toward the end of the book, after they’ve completed the quest and saved Thalia’s tree, restoring the barrier around camp. Percy and Annabeth team up for the redo of the chariot race, and being the dream team that they are, they emerge victorious. Annabeth celebrates their win by — wait for it — kissing Percy on the cheek! It makes the whole camp cheer louder, and honestly, I did the same thing when I read Sea of Monsters for the first time.
