It’s been years since Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir last skated together, but the former ice dancers still manage to capture fans’ attention, especially now that the latter is back in the spotlight as a Team Canada coach at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Further, a soundbite from Moir’s recent interview with Skate Ontario is making the rounds on social media. “I always say that my marriage is easy because of the lessons I learned with Tess,” he said on the outlet’s Let’s Talk About It podcast.
Moir continued, “I always say that I spent way too long on my wedding day talking about Tessa for anyone that didn’t understand Jackie and I’s relationship, because I kind of feel like everything Tessa and I went through, there’s no way I would’ve deserved a woman like Jackie if I hadn’t had those experiences.”
His comments come a few months after another Moir and Virtue-related post popped off on social media. A user quoted a video of their 2018 Winter Olympics routine, writing, “Who’s gonna tell the comments that they weren’t invited to each other’s weddings?” (More on that below.)
Back in 2018, Virtue and Moir were fielding dating rumors left and right from fans and the media, and they still are, at least going off the comments section of that video. Their decades-long story does seem like the perfect premise for a romance book, but did the ice-dancing partners ever actually date? Who are Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir?
Before Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir became some of the most decorated figure skaters in history, their story began almost 30 years ago at ages seven and nine. Once Virtue turned down an invitation from the National Ballet in Toronto in favor of ice dancing, she was paired with Moir in 1997, thanks to Moir’s aunt and their then-coach. They split their time between London and Waterloo in Canada, where they went to high school and trained, per The Globe and Mail.
They went on to earn national and international medals as juniors before becoming the youngest ice dancers to win gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, which is when many viewers started to dream that they had a romance off the ice. While they raked in plenty more medals in between Olympics — and starred in their own reality TV show, Tessa & Scott — they once again earned the top prize in 2018 with their previously mentioned Moulin Rouge!-themed routine. They retired the following year.

Virtue and Moir have only ever said that they dated for eight months as little kids. “It was romantic in the beginning,” Moir joked to The Globe and Mail. Virtue added, “It’s hard when you’ve grown up with someone.”
“The whole world would like them to date,” their former coach, Paul MacIntosh, told the outlet in 2018. “But they were ‘dating’ at age nine and seven, and I think Scotty broke it off. And he would say that’s 19 or 20 years of regret.”

Besides that, Virtue and Moir have never said that their bond was anything more than platonic. “Well, that’s such a compliment that you feel that when you watch us skate,” Virtue told Today, responding to people shipping them. “We love performing together. We love storytelling, especially with Satine and Christian in the Moulin Rouge! program. That was really close to our hearts. We knew we wanted to skate to that music.”
Her former partner also told The Star that same year, “We’re always telling stories. We’re supposed to be reacting, a man and woman on the ice. It’s romantic.” Still, the two — who once played a newlywed game and shared “platonic kisses on the lips during practices,” per the National Post — did once describe their relationship as “complicated.”
Moir reflected on the romance rumors in his February 2026 Skate Ontario interview. “It was weird maybe in our adolescent years because we had such a fantastic relationship,” he said. “And, you know, there was many years you don’t know what love really is. And Tess and I have real love between us. I really believe that, but it’s the love of a friendship. It’s the love of a business partnership.”
Who are Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir with now?
Moir once said on their reality show that it was “tricky to find someone who understands the relationship that Tessa and I have, because it’s unique,” but the two did wind up finding romantic partners.
Virtue is married to NHL player Morgan Rielly. During a January 2023 interview on the Without Losing Your Cool podcast, Virtue announced her engagement. She said she met her future husband through mutual friends, and they’d been together for several years at that point. Rumors of their relationship began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they appeared in an Instagram Live together, per People.
In February 2024, the couple confirmed they’d said “I do” via a HELLO Canada! interview. “I feel this immense responsibility. [Morgan] deserves someone who is at the top of their game, someone who is aiming to be the best version of themselves,” Virtue said. “I think there’s a desire to be the very best partners we can be for one another.”
As for Moir, his significant other also has a figure skating background. During his Canada Walk of Fame speech in 2018, Moir spoke about his relationship to Jackie Mascarin for the first time, according to HuffPost. He also dropped the news of his pending nuptials to the physician’s assistant.
In the speech, he thanked his aunt Carol, his former skating coach, who also paired him with Virtue when they were kids. “She’s pretty good at picking partners, I will say that,” he said. “And the first one that she gave me is now my fiancée, so that works alright.”
Since then, the couple has kept their relationship details under wraps. In September 2022, paNOW confirmed that Moir and Mascarin had recently married “after COVID-19 twice threw a wrench into wedding plans.” At the time the interview was published, their daughter was 18 months old.
Did Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir not invite each other to their weddings?
So, what’s up with that claim from the viral X post? Did the former duo really not attend each other’s weddings? The short answer is: No one really knows.
Virtue did say in an interview that she had two “secret” weddings, one at Toronto’s Noce restaurant and the other at Tuscany’s Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. The article mentioned that the guest list was small. “You know when something is just so meaningful to you that you simultaneously want to just hold on to it and protect it so fiercely, and also shout it from the rooftops?” Virtue said.
There’s almost no information available about Moir’s wedding besides that it took place in 2022. So, don’t believe everything you read on social media. At this point, it’s purely speculation. There’s really no way of knowing who attended whose wedding, unless the figure skating duo sees the viral post and addresses it themselves. At the very least, Moir has confirmed that Virtue came up as a topic of conversation on his wedding day.
